Founded by Nicu Alifantis in 1995 as a studio band for the recording of the album "Voiaj" (Journey), it became a project band in 1996, after having also recorded the album "Nichita". Their first stage appearance took place in July 1996 at the Medieval Art Festival in Sighișoara, where they gave the recital "Chanson pour mon amour". This festival gave the band a name: Zan.
Zan '... one of the most important masks of the Commedia dell'Arte, the one that brings the new breath of comedy, socially representing, through its cleverness, cunning and knowledge of the key to success, the revenge of the new class - the underclass of the fairs and villages... ("Commedia dell'Arte - Anthology, translation and notes" by Olga Marculescu - Editura Univers)
Alifantis & Zan, made up of talented musicians from different musical backgrounds (jazz, rock, pop), each with a strong artistic personality, have reached a special artistic affinity, finding together their own musical path.
Nicu Alifantis – voice, guitars, ukulele, washboard; Virgil Popescu – bass, vocal backing; Sorin Voinea – keyboards, vocal backing; Razvan Mirica – guitar, Indian lute, vocal backing; Relu Bitulescu – drums, and since 2010, they are joined by special guest Mihai Nenita - violin.
Of the more than 330 concerts to date, there have been some landmark ones with Ricky Martin, Simple Minds, Misia, Pataky Attila, Saragossa Band, culminating with the opening recital at the Bob Dylan concert in Bucharest in 2010. It never crossed my mind at the time that I would spend the next 20 years with these people, playing gigs in the country and abroad, recording albums, making friends, watching our children being born or growing up... It seems that the title of our first album, "Voiaj" (Journey), was predestined. A perpetual journey with people, among people, for people. Virgil, like a teacher, Mr. Headmaster, meticulous, demanding but polite, typical old school, composer, conductor, orchestrator, bass player, exceptional professional. Razvan, Englishman, polite, well-mannered, pedantic, amiable, skillful guitar player of all kinds in the most sensitive or explosive style. Sorin, the soul of a rocker, heavymetalurgist temperament, rebel or dreamer, good juggler in the words of the spirit, diligent dig into the hidden sounds among the keyboards and synthesizer buttons. Relu, the bohemian from Montmartre, always generous, coquettish, gallant, a young storyteller, talkative but full of fun, constantly shuttling between the stage and the studio, clutching brushes or drumsticks. Thus began the story... Zan, a story of more than two decades, a perpetual journey with people among people for people. It never crossed my mind for a moment that with these fairies I was going to spend years playing gigs all over the country and abroad, recording albums, making friends, watching our children being born or our grandchildren growing up... Like any beautiful story, this one is told in the evening, whispered in the light of the soul and is hard to forget... Nicu Alifantis
