Choreology Workshop coordinated by Andrea Gavriliu
From March 24 to 29, 2025, the "I.L Caragiale" National Theatre in Bucharest organizes, within the "Ion Sava" Centre for Theatre Research and Creation, a Choreology workshop (the analysis of movement to make visible what we want to express) coordinated by choreographer Andrea Gavriliu.
The workshop will be attended by 15 artists (choreographers, actors, directors - professionals or students). The selection will be based on the CV sent to centrulsavatnb@gmail.com by March 16, 2025. Those selected to participate in the choreology workshop will be announced on March 18.
The choreology workshop will take place at the TNB, in a rehearsal room. During this period, the workshop will take place daily from 10:00 to 13:00, and participants must be present throughout the workshop.
"Beyond the baggage of aesthetic preferences that each individual carries with him or her, the study of choreology offers rational strategies for analyzing an artistic work, examining each of its component layers: the movement itself, the person responsible for its expression, the space in which it takes place and the sound that accompanies it. The choreology workshop consists of exercises based on movement analysis, a tool designed to observe, create and evaluate movement from five basic perspectives: the body, the actions it is capable of, its dynamic quality, the space in which it is located and the relationships that can arise from interacting with it. The awareness of intentions in the smallest changes of form emphasizes that stage movement is loaded with meaning and its purpose is to communicate.
The exercises are inspired by Rudolf Laban's research on movement, which incorporated methodologies from dance-related fields: music, theater, visual art and anthropology.
As a result, choreologists are common practitioners among choreographers, dancers, teachers, performers, directors, actors - professions in which bodily and verbal knowledge work simultaneously. In the workshop, participants will work in teams of 3-4 people, based on an "original material" of their choice, which will be "altered" from all five perspectives through which movement can be choreologically appreciated: body, actions, dynamics, space, relationships. In this way, five facets of the same material will be obtained, which can be put together to produce group choreographies, where analysis meets creativity." - Andrea Gavriliu, choreographer
