Beyond performances and the stage, the I.L. Caragiale National Theater in Bucharest preserves a special memory through its museum, which opened to the public in 1942. Here, the theater can be interpreted differently: through material evidence that has stood the test of time and recalls artists, historical periods, and the connection between art and society.
The museum's collections bring together stage costumes, props, paintings and sculptures, posters, manuscripts, documents, and photographs that illustrate the evolution of Romanian theater arts and preserve the institution's identity.
After the renovation of the TNB building (2010–2015), the museum's heritage required extensive reorganization, focused on the restoration of cultural assets and the modernization of storage and exhibition conditions. To meet these needs, the National Theater accessed funding through the RO-CULTURA program, supported by EEA and Norwegian grants, with the aim of restoring 38 cultural assets and showcasing them.
This is how Queen Maria at the Theater came about, an exhibition that brings back to the public stage costumes, documents, and testimonies from that era, in a narrative that starts with Queen Maria's silver thread dress. The exhibition is accessible through guided tours, whose schedule is announced weekly on the NTB website (Calendar).
For groups, visits are organized by appointment at muzeu@tnb.ro, in order to offer an experience tailored to the interests and pace of each visitor.
