The JTI Meetings, at the 20th edition
IT Dansa in Barcelona, for the first time in Bucharest
IT Dansa, the dance company of the Barcelona Theatre Institute, is coming to Romania for the first time for the 20th edition of the JTI Meetings - an anniversary edition celebrating youth. For 20 years, the JTI Meetings have brought to Romania famous dance companies that otherwise the audience in our country could only see on the big stages of the world, as well as shows presented for the first time in Bucharest.
The most gifted dancers of the Spanish Theatre Institute will present on November 28th, 2019, 8 pm, at the Bucharest National Theatre, three choreographic moments, belonging to some important contemporary choreographers: Whim by Alexander Ekman, In Memoriam by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and The Prom by Lorena Nogal.
IT Dansa is a rising star breeding ground, with all dancers selected after graduation from large companies: Nederlands Dans Theater (Netherlands), Verpommer Theater (Germany), Euregio Staatstheater am Gämeplatz (Germany), El Gulbenkian Ballet (Portugal), Abcdance Company (Austria), Companhia do Bailado (Portugal).
World-renowned choreographers such as Jirí Kylián, Ohad Naharin, Rui Horta, Nacho Duato, Ramon Oller, Toni Mira, Akram Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui or Alexander Ekman not only taught, but also performed special choreographies for IT Dansa, the lessons becoming extraordinary show
Whim, a work signed by Alexander Ekman, will be presented for the first time in Romania, during the JTI Meetings. "Whim looks at how we maintain our mental health, while deep within us is madness. This play offers a variety of real-life situations. Gradually, I began to realize that I had created a somewhat bizarre, dark and sad music. And in the end, you're not sure whether to laugh or cry. It's funny, but it's not really hilarious. It's sad, but not so sad. It's nice, without really being that way, ”Ekman explains the choreographic approach.
Alexander Ekman has created dozens of pieces for dance companies around the world and has received numerous awards for his work, including "Medea Award - Inventor of the Year" or "National Dance Award UK".
At the base of the play In Memoriam, in the choreography of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui lies the connection between reality and memory. "The dancers explore the movements of attraction and repulsion, magnetism and anti-magnetism, in order to analyze the meaning of the word "harmony". The tenderness (the attraction) and the aggression (the repulsion) originate from the same source, in an intimate game of polarization ”, declares the choreographer.
In 2008, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui received the title of Exceptional Choreographer of the Year, awarded by the Tanz Ballet and a committee of 40 dance critics from across Europe for his work in 2007 and 2008. In 2009, he received the European Cultural Award Kairos granted by Alfred Toepfer Stiftung, and was praised by the jury for "asking questions about human existence, expressed through movement and for the links created between different elements from different cultures". Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui was invited to the JTI Meetings in 2014, and in 2019, at the International Theatre Festival in Sibiu, he received a star on the Walk of Fame, which was awarded to him by JTI.
The Prom, in Lorena Nogal's choreography, explores everyday situations, which seem insignificant, but which strongly influence us. "I wonder: do people realize the amount of small things that, without realizing it, are capable of changing our existence? (...) because of these small things you become who you are or who you want to be." Lorena Nogal
Lorena Nogal was trained as a dancer at the Theatre Institute of Barcelona, and as a choreographer she was acknowledged and awarded at important national competitions.
We look forward to the 20th edition of the JTI Meetings!
