The Jean-Claude Galotta dance company presents My Ladies Rock - “an explosive, sensual and poetic show”.
The Jean-Claude Galotta dance company is coming to Romania for the first time, at the 22nd edition of the JTI Meetings. My Ladies Rock, choreographed by Jean-Claude Galotta will be presented for the first time to the Romanian public in Bucharest, on June 30, 2022, at 8 pm, at the National Theater from Bucharest, Ion Caramitru Hall.
The son of Italian emigrants, Jean-Claude Galotta discovers dance at the age of 22, after graduating from Beaux-Arts in Grenoble. At the end of the '70s, he met Merce Cunningham in New York and got access to the world of postmodern dance. When he returned to Grenoble, he co-founded Groupe Émile Dubois with Mathilde Altaraz, which became in 1984 one of the first national choreography centers in France. He invents a playful and vibrant dance, with a rich construction, allowing the performers to show their talent through improvisation and virtuosity through the quality of the performance.
Jean-Claude Gallotta has created over 80 choreographies, presented to the dance-loving audiences on all continents. He also performed some of his works at major national ballets in France, such as the Opéra de Paris, Opéra de Lyon and Opéra de Bordeaux. Over the years, he has enriched his repertoire by combining dance with literature, music or film.
The Jean-Claude Gallotta Company is a partner of Maison de la Culture Grenoble and has also started a partnership with the Théâtre du Rond Point in Paris.
“For My Ladies Rock, I chose the songs I used to listen to when I was a teenager (...)”, says the choreographer in an interview with Quest-France. “When I write, I feel like I'm doing author work. As a tribute to Merce Cunningham, I work quietly: I have the songs in mind, but first of all I imagine the choreography, the drama of the dance. Then I see if the music matches the movement. (...). I'm not against music, but I want to keep a certain sense of freedom from music”, explains Jean-Claude Galotta, according to the same source.
“One won't get bored not even for a second”, Web Theater writes about “My Ladies Rock”, and for Le Figaro Magazine, the show is “unique and enchanting”. Publik' Art writes about an “explosive, sensual and poetic” dance, and Sud Ouest about “an event show that must be discovered”. The dancers are “obviously happy to move to this music, releasing a vitality that is in perfect harmony with the performers of the songs. They put the stage to the edge of the sword. (...) A generous show that demonstrates how intelligence and fun can go hand in hand.” (Ballet 2000).
