Twenty years in Siberia to Chisinau

23 March 2016

Five Days of Romanian Theatre at Kishinev Within the framework of the second edition of the Romanian Theatre Tour at Bucharest and Kishinev – the extensive project of cultural exchanges launched in 2014 between the National Theatres, ā€œI.L. Caragialeā€ of Bucharest and ā€žMihai Eminescuā€ of Kishinev – the actors of the Bucharest National Theatre shall perform in the capital of the Republic of Moldova, on March 23 and 24 two representations of the shows 20 Years in Siberia and No Matter How Hard We Tried. This NTB tour is a replica of the tour in Bucharest and Iaşi, performed at the beginning of this year by TNME of Kishinev with two shows, received with much warmth and prolonged applause, The House on the Border by Slawomir Mrozek and Filumena Marturano by Eduardo de Filippo. By including a third partner - the ā€Vasile Alecsandriā€ National Theatre of Iași, itself present in Kishinev with shows – the current edition, taking place in the timeframe 23 – 27 March 2016, of the above mentioned cultural exchange has turned into a ā€trilateralā€! Directed by Sorin Misirianțu and with a highly dramatic interpretation by Amalia Ciolan, 20 Years in Siberia – the dramatic monologue-show after the book by Anița Nandriș-Cudla 20 Years in Siberia. Memories from Life returns to Kishinev, where it has been presented with great success on the occasion of another event, the Reunion of National Theatres, which took place in September 2015. The other show of the Bucharest National, which shall be played on this occasion before the Bessarabian audience,Ā No Matter How Hard We Tried by Dorota Masłowska, directed by Radu Afrim, is an excellent political parable talking about the destinies of some peoples run over mercilessly by the heavy plough of history. The show, displaying a remarkable cast, has received the score ā€exceptionalā€ from the specialised Romanian critics and we have no doubt that its reception by the audience beyond the river Prut will match this appraisal. Twenty years in Siberia to Edinburgh

17 October 2015

Twenty years in Siberia will have performances in Edinburgh in October 17. Ā A dramatic monologue based on ā€œ20 Years in Siberia. The Memories of a Lifetimeā€ by Anita Nandris-CudlaStarring Amalia CiolanAdaptation, direction and set design by Sorin MisiriantuĀ ā€ž20 Years in Siberiaā€ is the destiny of a peasant woman in Bucovina, North Romania, the author of one of the most important testimonials of the feared Soviet Gulag. Anita and her entire family were among the 13,000 Romanians who lived the terror of deportation in June 1941. She experienced famine, disease and hard work in one of the harshest environments on Earth, managing to bring up her sons and return to her native village in 1961. Her book of memoirs was only published after the Romanian Revolution in 1989 and was awarded the ā€žLucian Blagaā€ Prize of the Romanian Academy.Ā Brought on stage by the Bucharest National Theatre in a most powerful one woman show and accompanied by striking visuals, the performance unveils the true terror of communism that affected every person whose life was affected and changed forever. Amalia Cioran masterfully manages to bring to life the universe of this simple woman, a perfect storyteller and a striking personality, a narration stripped of hatred, self pity or accusations, an account of things just as they happened. Ā Ā The performance is part of the ā€œThe Trial of Communism through Theatreā€ Programme and the Romanian Cultural Days in Edinburgh programme, organised by the Romanian Cultural Institute in London in partnership with cultural organisations in Edinburgh.Ā Tickets availableĀ  Ā£10 general admission, Ā£5 concessionĀ£5 for groups of over 20 (email office@icr-london.co.uk)Ā  Ā  DetailsĀ Ā
