The Masks of Commedia Dell'Arte
23 November 2006Performed by : Ferruccio SolerDate: November 23 - December 8, 2006What is, actually, Ferruccio Soleri like? No word is good enough for describing him. Place a mask on his face, let him take a couple of steps on stage and you will swear that it is a 25 year-old man's body. Within the ten days he had been working with us, we learnt that the most difficult, when on stage, is to thoroughly stop for a moment, then take a deep breath and go ahead. It is not a metaphor. I really mean to freeze your hands, feet, breath, mind or thoughts. And, if you don't effectively stop, you cannot truly start. I also understood why those people performe all their life just one role and, yet, they don't get bored. My sweat clustered into the chin scoop (under the mask) for the three steps which I failed to perform, in front of the audience, exactly how Soleri wanted, although I had done them well during the rehearsals. Movement, thought, voice, sense, reason, purpose, rhythm, simplicity ... all at once? Since I met Ferruccio Soleri, I have vaguely suspected that perfection actually exists, but we feel more comfortable to think ...Lia Bugnar
