The woman who loved too much

"Women can live when they are not loved, but cannot live without loving. If there is no one to chain them in love, they chain themselves. In the Montenegrin patriarchal family there is in addition such a specific link between brother and sister.

Lubomir Jurkovitch is one of the Montenegro most prominent playwrights (“Tobelia”, “Dunghill”, “The Lie of Teresy”). He is proponent of the European social drama dealing with important contemporary problems, the paradox of the patriarchate, and the position of the so called “libertine women” who run away from liberation. He deals with the problem of the ancient Montenegrin and Albanian custom of “Tobelia” (this custom is much alive today) – this custom exists in the families without male hairs, where a woman has pledged chastity and takes upon the role of the missing son in a world of wars and blood revenge.

Lubomir Jurkovitch depicts the broken feelings of three women – a mother, a daughter and a sister in law – after the death of the only man in the family. He finds the solution of this problem in a manner unusual for the period of the eightieth years of the twentieth century in the former Yugoslavia. The music – the Yugoslav rock prompts the geographical solution. And the performance prompts that forms of “Tobelia” still exist today when there are many single mothers who live without working men and are caring for their families. The “Tobelia” myth is still living.

The performance is dedicated to Bertolt Brecht and Dimitar Gochev." Niko Gorshitch
