I Love Tchaikovsky Gala Concert

07 May 2018

Private event hosted by the National Theatre of Bucharest. The organiser is exclusively liable for the quality and content of this event! You are kindly invited on the evening of 7th May 2018, from 7:00 p.m., to the NTB Studio Hall, to the I Love Tchaikovsky Gala Concert, dedicated to the greatest Russian composer, the magician of sounds and creator of fantastic worlds: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. This event, organised by the Calea Victoriei Foundation is the third concert from the series I love Classics, after I love Mozart (2016) and I love Verdi (2017). In this edition, conductor Tiberiu Soare and Symphactory Orchestra, a remarkable independent orchestra, have the young and gifted Mihai Diaconescu as a guest. „I feel I shall live a long time”, said Tchaikovsky, and this came true: his music is performed worldwide; the pieces composed by him belong to the most well-known works from the history of classical music, adored by the audience of all ages. For our journey into the musical universe imagined by Tchaikovsky, we have chosen three different destinations, full of expressiveness and memorable surprises. In the first part, we shall be enveloped by the Concert for Piano and Orchestra no. 1, one of the most famous symphonic concerts. 130 years since the completion of this spectacular composition, the concert surprises us through its freshness and robustness: a balanced creation, but filled with contrasts, through the alternance of suave, romantic moments with the majestic, forceful ones. The second halt shall be in the world of Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet brought to life through the passionate score, like a movie soundtrack, written in a classical, rigorous form of a sonata, but enriched by Tchaikovsky with a personal vision on the story. The last stop in the musical universe created by the brilliant Russian composer reveals to us the suites from Swan Lake, the apotheosis of romantic ballet, the most frequently performed ballet in the world. The suites include character dances and represent a journey through several musical genres, several types of European dances: Neapolitan dance, Spanish dance, mazurka, Hungarian dance, Russian dance. The evening shall conclude with joy, applauses, embraces, photographs with musicians and friends, plus autographs offered warm-heartedly. The I Love Tchaikovsky Gala Concert is organised with the support of the Bondoc and Associates SCA Legal Practitioners, SLooP and The National University of Music Bucharest. Media partners: Radio Romania Muzical, Radio Romania Cultural, RFI Romania, Romania Libera, Forbes Life, Agerpres, 100delocuri.ro, Bookblog, Bookhub, Bucurestii Vechi si Noi, Kudika, 9AM, Metropolis newspaper Tickets to the I love Tchaikovsky Gala Concert can only be purchased through the Eventim network: the stores Vodafone, Orange, Germanos, Carrefour, the Cărturești and Humanitas bookshops, the OMV gas stations or online. The poster is created by illustrator Maria Surducan.                   The Calea Victoriei Foundation is the only place in Bucharest where one can develop with the aid of art and culture through a great diversity of trainings and cultural and interactive events. For over 10 years, we have been inspiring through art and culture and supporting gifted young people. We have succeeded in pioneering in the way cultural events are organised and, in time, we have proven that we have become an academy within which over 100 researchers, artists and trainers have evolved as lecturers. We pride ourselves on over 50 000 trainees who have participated in our projects and on over 2000 young people who received scholarships (free participation in the favourite courses). We thank all those who have supported us during all these years: the National Military Circle, Grand Hotel Continental, the National University of Music Bucharest, the National Bank of Romania, the Odeon Theatre and the Cotroceni Museum.   Translated by Simona Nichiteanu

Rabih Abou-Khalil Trio in Romanian Premiere

12 June 2017

A concert - event, a musical voyage between East and West, at the frontier between jazz, rock, classical music and traditional Arabic music. Rabih Abou-Khalil, legend of ethno-jazz and of world music, for his first time in Bucharest. A concert in which he shall perform his most beautiful trios. With over 30 albums in his portfolio, among which 23 in his capacity as composer and group leader, under the labels ECM, Enja and Harmonia Mundi, Khalil has collaborated with a plethora of bright musicians, passionate about mixing musical genres. These include Alexandru Bălănescu, Kronos Quartet, Yo-Yo Ma & Silk Road Ensemble, among the classical musicians or Joachim Kuhn, Kenny Wheeler, Steve Swallow, Charlie Mariano, Vincent Courtois, Michel Godard among the jazz musicians. Abou-Khalil was among the first to mix traditional Arabic music with "Western" music: jazz, classical or rock, borrowing something from each of them and creating an original music, which does not fall into the sin of "fusion" music. Consequently, he is savoured with equal joy by the lovers of classical, jazz or rock music. He is also associated with Anouar Brahem, both having the merit to bring the oud, the instrumental king of Arabic music to the European concert stages and to place it at the forefront, as a favourite instrument of world music. What distinguishes Abou-Khalil from Brahem, is his technique, similar to the one of jazz guitarists, with rapid solos, and his compositions are filled with solar and humourous feelings. Rabih Abou-Khalil is Lebanese, raised in cosmopolitan Beirut before the civil war, who then came to Europe for studies. He is living in France and Germany and travels all over the world. He is joined to Bucharest by two friends, who accompanied him for a lifetime: Luciano Biondini from Italy, about whom it is said that he "weaves accordion fantasies" and Jarrod Cagwin from the United States at oriental percussions, an artist with a tremendous melodious sense. A concert proposed by Jazz Fan Rising, the association of jazz connoisseurs, in partnership with the Embassy of Lebanon. Organiser: the Jazz Festivals & Events Foundation.   Translated by Simona Nichiteanu

Quartet Gala – Legends of the Dance, at the JTI Meetings

08 October 2016

Mats Ek shall showcase on 7 and 8 October 2016, at the National Theatre of Bucharest, within the JTI Meetings, two extraordinary choreographic works, alongside his wife and muse, Ana Laguna. Mats Ek won the Europe Theatre Prize, which was awarded to him on April 26 in Craiova. This prize represents the most prestigious European recognition in the field, being attributed to personalities or institutions which contributed to the creation of vital cultural events in the mutual understanding and knowledge of people. The winner has been designated for his entire artistic path, among the first-rate personalities of international theatre. Mats Ek has already been present at the JTI Meetings in 2005, as a choreographer of the Cullberg Ballet, with three anthological works - Aluminium, original creation, Empty House and Negro con Flores, both signed by Johan Inger -, highly appreciated at that moment by the audience, the specialised press and the critics. At the 2016 edition of the JTI Meetings, alongside Mats Ek and Ana Laguna, other two legendary names shall dance, Susanne Linke and Dominique Mercy. The four artists, selected by choreographer Daniele Cipriani, shall perform an original gala - Quartet Gala – proving that despite the passage of time, or maybe exactly for this reason, the mature dancers are a vast wellspring of experience, emotions, wisdom, depth. Ek (70 years) shall perform together with Ana Laguna (61 years), The Potato and the Memory, giving the audience the truly unique opportunity to admire a famous couple dancing its „autobiography” and the rare chance to see choreographer Ek dancing. Together, the two artists emanate a strong energy, and the chemistry between them is genuinely tangible. „Potato is a dialogue of an established couple. A playful and morose look upon the „torment” of cohabitation, filled with contrasts, well conceived in its powerful drama and strewn with paroxysms of scathing humour. Memory (…) presents fragments from the daily life of the team formed by husband and wife, leaving to dance the power to suggest the amplitude of words left unsaid, bonding two human beings, treading on the same path of their existential journey” (Leonetta Bentivoglio, theatre critic).                                                    Dominique Mercy (65 years), famous performer with Pina Bausch, shall introduce the audience into the specific atmosphere of the Bausch Theatre, interpreting the solo That Paper Boy, in the choreography of Paschal Merighi. The internationally acknowledged dancer and choreographer of German origin, Susanne Linke (71 years) shall interpret A Lost Solo...With Greeting To Dore, created in 2014 and based on the volcanic version of the fascinating creation The Rite of Spring, by Igor Stravinsky. Founded in 2000, by the famous ballet company Bejart Ballet Lausanne, the JTI Meetings have hosted renowned dancers, choreographers and ballet troupes: Nacho Duato and Compania Nacional De Danza, Joaquin Cortes, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Tango Pasion, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Sylvie Guillem and Russell Maliphant, Gigi Căciuleanu and the National Ballet of Chile, Alonzo King Lines Ballet, Vortice Dance Company, Maria Pagés and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Akram Khan Company. The event is organised this year as well by the Art Production Foundation, under the artistic counselling of Silviei Ghiață. Tickets are available at the ticketing counter of the National Theatre of Bucharest (tel. 021-314.71.71), in the Eventim network (Orange, Vodafone, Germanos, Carrefour stores, OMV gas stations, Cărtureşti, Humanitas bookstores) and online on www.eventim.ro.                                               You are most welcome at the JTI Meetings!   Translated by Simona Nichiteanu

Strangers in the Night

18 May 2015

Independent show hosted by the National Theatre of Bucharest! The play will be held at 5 P.M. as well, due to the high demand of the audience! Do you like Piersic? How about Radu Beligan? Then, you must see “Strangers in the Night”, which is one of the favourite plays of the audience, a real work of art directed by Radu Beligan. The protagonists are Florin Piersic, who does not even need a presentation, and Medeea Marinescu – an extremely valuable actress for her generation, whose performance perfectly blends with the unique and remarkable acting skills of master “Mărgelatu'”. In “Strangers in the Night”, Florin Piersic is Pierre, a man in the prime of his life, who, after a night spent in a bar, is taken home by Julietta (Medeea Marinescu), a beautiful young woman. She knows who he is and that is precisely why she wanted to accompany him to his apartment. That night, he finds out something that will change his life. But until revealing the big secret, Julietta confesses that she is a prostitute and asks for money, and then she says that she is actually a reporter and she is doing a research for her next article. These twists are meant to reveal who these characters really are. This play brought Florin Piersic back on the stage of the theatre and he confessed that he felt younger when playing. The plays fits him like a glove, it is a romantic comedy with incredible twists, lies, seduction and a lesson about how time changes us all. Pierre is the type of man who feels that he hasn’t accomplished everything he wanted in life, and Julietta is the type of woman who wants to get what she sets her mind to and recover a part of her life, which she lost in her youth. Their roads cross because each wants something from the other, and this thing leads them to other secrets that need to be revealed. The play is fascinating not only because Florin Piersic’s name is on the poster. It is a masterpiece, a play in which you can’t wait to see what happens next, what will they say and how will the action flow. And this thing is very important when it comes to theatre because you must not have time to get bored when you are in the hall. The play lasts for 2 hours. The JTI Meetings – the Akram Khan Dance Company comes to Bucharest

08 May 2015

JTI Romania invites you to the sixteenth edition of the JTI Meetings event. Akram Khan Dance Company will perform the Kaash production on the stage of the Grand Hall of the National Theater of Bucharest, on 8th and 9th May, starting at 20:00. We are talking about a revival of the production, which had its international premiere last year. When it was originally premiered, in 2002, the Kaash (it is the Hindu word for if) production fascinated both the public and the critics. A show which shook the world, as The Daily Star wrote, whereas The Times of London highlighted its superbly synchronized expressivity, and The Daily Telegraph inspiredly noted: Kaash makes you shiver with emotion. The Guardian has described the Kaash production as an exploration of the Universe in 55 minutes, and Akram Khan as a dark star of the dance. Kaash occupies a very special place in our hearts. The new troupe, consisting of five international artists, shall cast a different light and energy on the play, which focuses on the physical shape and precision, which is, I believe, a great revelation of 2014, affirmed Akram Khan about the revived production. As the artist himself explains, the Hindu gods, black holes, Indian temporal cycles, the concept of creation and destruction have been the starting points for Kaash, perpetuating the attempt to build bridges between the contemporary dance and the Kathak Indian classical dance form. In only fourteen years, Akram Khan Dance Company has become one of the most innovative dance companies in the world. The Company has a major international presence and goes on tours which reach out to many cultures across the globe. Akram Khan has received numerous international dance awards, such as the Laurence Olivier Award, in 2012. The artist is currently a practitioner-in-residence at the University of the Arts London, an associate artist at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London andthe Grenoble Theatre in France, and he also collaborates with other leading festivals around the world. The JTI Meetings event, which was initiated by the famous ballet company Béjart Ballet Lausanne in 2000,has hosted renowned dancers, choreographers and ballet companies ever since, such as: Nacho Duato and the Spanish National Dance Company, the Cullberg Ballet, Joaquín Cortés, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Tango Pasión, the Monte-Carlo Ballet, Sylvie Guillem and Russell Maliphant, Gigi Căciuleanu and the Chilean National Ballet, the Alonzo King LINES Ballet of San Francisco, the Vortice Dance Company, Maria Pagés and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. The JTI Meetings event is once again organized by the Art Production Foundation, with the artistic counseling of Silvia Ghiță. We are looking forward to meet you at the JTI Meetings event!   The tickets are available in the Eventim network (Orange, Vodafone, Germanos, and Domo shops and Cărturești and Humanitas bookstores) and online on www.eventim.ro.   Translated by: Izabela – Elvira Vațe MTTLC, The University of Bucharest

The time of your life 2015

23 March 2015

In 1996, Mircea Patrichi publishes the volume “Gina Patrichi. The time of your life” at Unitex Publishing House. It is a volume of great biographical value about a unique artist of the stage. On page three of this book, there lays a testimony belonging to Gina Patrichi that we will share with you and which we find to be revealing the meaning the public can give the theatre. The “Artists for artists” campaign that we have been organizing for several years, with the purpose of touching a chord in all of us when in front of art and the artist, can be represented by this testimony: “I believe in the general public’s capacity of understanding the meaning of art and appreciating the artist that wins over with his soul”. In 1964, in William Saroyan’s “The time of your life”, directed by Liviu Ciulei, Gina Patrichi played Kitty Duval like no one else could. And she won over the public with her soul. With the same sensitive touch, in 2015, another performance of “The time of your life” takes place. A performance that is an event of revelations, which joins together distinguished artists of the stage, artists who assure us with their souls that the theatre is more than just method, work and talent. It is a stupendous gift made to the public. Victor Bucur, Corina Chiriac, Felicia Filip, Mirela Jienescu, Rodica Mandache, Teatrul Masca, Maia Morgenstern, Adrian Naidin, Ovidiu Niculescu, Ioan Gyuri Pascu, Margareta Pâslaru and „Divina Armonie” choir, Oana Pellea, Emilia Popescu, Victor Rebengiuc, Florin Zamfirescu. The hosts: Maria Dinulescu and Ion Caramitru. A onetime only performance: Monday, March 23rd, 2015. The “I.L. Caragiale” National Theatre of Bucharest, Studio Hall, at 19:30. The performance “The time of your life” 2015 is dedicated to our elderly artists. It represents a sign of curtsy and remembrance of the artists that seem to act according to Gina Patrichi’s words: “... I had such a passion for theatre that all the love which I have received [...] was a great gift that I took and directed it to the theatre, to the people to whom I gave feelings, passion, love, hate, to the apogee, evening after evening...” Join the campaign, buy tickets, enjoy the theatre and do a good deed! Every ticket represents not only a sign of curtsy for the work of the actors, but also an immense help. The tickets will be sold at the box office of the National Theatre of Bucharest and online, at www.bilet.ro The sums collected from selling the tickets can be donated to the Theatrical Solidarity Fund (Account: RO40RZBR0000060007801286, opened at Raiffeisen Bank, Piața Amzei Agency). Afterwards, the financial support offered to the elderly artists with health problems will be proof that this symbolic contract of theatrical solidarity was assumed and endorsed. Strangers in the Night - December 15

15 December 2014

Do you like Piersic? How about Radu Beligan? If you do, then you must see the play “Strangers in the Night”, a performance which still ranks among the first for theatregoers, a true masterpiece directed by the great artist Radu Beligan. Its protagonists are Florin Piersic, who doesn’t need any other introduction and Medeea Marinescu – an extremely valuable actress for her generation, whose interpretation of the role will blend perfectly with the unique and remarkable acting of the master “Mărgelatu.” In the play Strangers in the Night, Florin Piersic plays the role of Pierre, a man in his prime, who after a night spent in a bar, is taken home by Julietta (Medeea Marinescu), a beautiful young woman. She knows who he is and that is exactly why she wants to accompany him to his apartment and he is the one to find out something that night that will change his life forever. But up until revealing the big secret, Julietta first confesses she is a prostitute and asks for money, then that in fact she is a reporter and she’s making inquiries regarding her next article, all these twists being meant to reveal to us who the two characters really are. With this play, Florin Piersic re-entered the theatre world and he even confessed that he feels younger every time he acts a part. The play suits him, it’s a romantic comedy full of twists, lies, seduction and a lesson about the way time changes us. Pierre is the man who feels he didn’t accomplish everything he wanted in life and Julietta is the woman who wants to get what she set her mind on, to get back that part of life she lost when she was young. Their paths cross because both want something from the other, which leads them to other secrets in need of revealing. The play is fascinating, but not only because the name Florin Piersic appears on the playbill. The reason is that the performance is a masterpiece, a play which makes you wait breathlessly for whatever is next, for what they are going to say and how it will all play out. And this is a very important thing when it comes to theatre, because there should never be enough time for one to get bored while inside the auditorium.   Duration: 2 hours Price/ticket: 100 RON   Translated by: Bianca-Lidia Zbarcea MTTLC, University of Bucharest
