“Kontakt” International Theatre Festival from Torun - a Polish window to the European and world theatre
On Thursday, May 26, 2022, in Torun, Poland, the “I.L. Caragiale” National Theatre will present An (Un)usually Free Script Based on Chekhov, directed by Radu Afrim, a guest performance at the "Kontakt" International Theatre Festival.
The performance will start at 6 pm (local time), on the main stage of the very modern Jordanki Cultural and Congress Centre in Torun (a masterpiece of the modern architecture by the Spanish architect Fernando Menis) and will be followed by a meeting with the press and the audience.
The performance will also be broadcast live via the Festival's own online streaming platform (VOD).
After two years in an online format due to the pandemic, with the edition from 2022, the “Kontakt” Festival is resuming in full, in a hybrid format, with live, on-stage performances complemented by live streamings and online broadcastings.
Organized since 1991 by the “Wilam Horzyca” Theatre in Toruń, Poland, the “Kontakt” International Theatre Festival was founded by the well-known Polish director Krystyna Meissner (1933 - 2022).
Over the years, the “Kontakt” Festival has become an important meeting point between different cultural spaces, sometimes difficult to reconcile in the new geo-political reality. "The format of the festival created by Krystyna Meissner is still relevant today, so it's not worth revolutionizing it by force. I would like to come back to the idea of “Kontakt” as a festival that refreshes the vision of the Polish audiences, creates new theatre leaders in Europe, and shows how much - again! - we need a common dialogue, beyond the social and ideological prejudices and the Polish particularities"- says Renata Derejczyk, the current director of the “Wilam Horzyca” Theatre in Torun.
The quality of the festival is primarily due to the artistic value of the performances presented, chosen on the basis of a demanding selection carried out by a jury set up for this purpose.
Four foreign performances were invited to this year's festival. For the first time in an international tour, the performance presented by the “I.L. Caragiale” National Theatre from Bucharest is part of this selection, together with those from: Switzerland - "Songs without lyrics", directed by Thom Luz (Bernetta Theaterproduktionen, Zurich), Czech Republic - "Lost Illusions" dramatization after Balzac, directed by Jan Mikulasek (Teatr na Zabradli, Prague) and Lithuania - "Tales from the Viennese Forest", dramatization after Odon von Horvath, directed by Yanna Ross (Vilnius Youth Theatre).
Radu Afrim's Three Sisters. An (Un)usually Free Script Based on Chekhov offers a remix of a classic play, a hallucinating and highly topical revival of a story told hundreds of times before. A powerful, original and shocking production that, like all the works made by Afrim, will take the viewers out of their comfort zone. "...is not a "Chekhovian" enactment in the established sense of the term, but it offers a distinct, recognizable vision, in the style that imposed Radu Afrim as one of the most unconventional and gifted theatre directors in Romania" - attributes on which the Polish selection has also relied.
The play Three Sisters. An (Un)usually Free Script Based on Chekhov features a cast made up of some of the best-known actors of the moment and is produced in collaboration with a team of innovative artists with whom Radu Afrim constantly collaborates (Irina Moscu - set design, Andrei Cozlac - video design, Călin Țopa - sound design). The cast includes Raluca Aprodu, Natalia Călin, Flavia Giurgiu, Marius Manole, Emilian Oprea, Istvan Teglas, Irina Movilă, Ada Galeș, Ciprian Nicula, Florin Călbăjos.
We wish them good luck!
