NTB’s Tempest to Be Enacted at the Shakespeare International Festival
One of the most modern enactments of the The Tempest, William Shakespeare’s well-known play, in the innovative vision of Bulgarian director Alexander Morfov, shall be presented within the framework of the current edition, the tenth, of the Shakespeare International Theatre Festival, rated as one of the major festivals of the contemporary theatrical world.
For 10 days, as of 14 April 2016, this year’s edition shall present, in a plethora of cultural events of great interest, performances from 15 countries and 4 continents. Famous troupes, prestigious actors and renowned directors make up the calling card of the Shakespeare International Theatre Festival of Craiova, which shall take place in most distinct spaces, from theatre halls to surprising and unconventional premises, like the roof of the Craiova National Theatre. The current edition shall not only be held in Craiova, but also in Bucharest, Râmnicu Vâlcea, Slatina, Târgu Jiu and Drobeta Turnu Severin.
The show of the I.L. Caragiale National Theatre shall be performed at its headquarters. Recently returned to the season’s playbill, the Tempest with Ion Caramitru (recently appointed by the British Council Shakespeare Cultural Ambassador in Romania) in the leading role and with Alexandra Sălceanu (new addition to the NTB troupe!) as Miranda, is scheduled for the evening of 22 April, in the NTB Grand Hall as of 8.00 p.m.
This notable achievement of the Bucharest National Theatre appears on the poster of the anniversary event, in an exquisite international company, comprising: Richard III from Berlin, directed byThomas Ostermeier (the great revelation of the 2015 Avignon Festival), presented by the Schaubühne Theatre, Richard II of the legendary Japanese director Yukio Ninagawa, Macbeth, presented by the Baltic House Theatre Festival, directed by renowned Luk Perceval, the British productions Hamlet, directed by Andrew Hilton, performed by the Shakespeare Tobacco Factory, The Comedy of Errors directed by Ben Humphrey, from the Worcester Repertory Company and Hamlet, produced by Kelly Hunter in Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of the famous playwright.
The Romanian productions based on Great Will’s oeuvre, included in the selection of the Festival, also comprise Julius Caesar of the „Marin Sorescu” National Theatre Craiova, directed by Peter Schneider, as well as Folia, Shakespeare & Co of choreographer Gigi Căciuleanu, one of the most prominent Romanian artists in the world, which you can see on Saturday, 23 April 2016, at NTB.
The NTB show The Tempest, directed by Alexander Morfov, has already participated in a few national and international festivals, in 2015 at MITEM (Madach International Theatre Meeting and the ”Theaterstock” Festival of Bacău, and in 2014 at the National Theatre Festival.
At its 10th edition, a festive one, the Shakespeare Festival is a special event for worldwide culture, one of the major ones, in the context in which 400 year commemorations take place throughout the world in the honour of William Shakespeare.
