Online Theatre for American Spectators
From the desire to meet and welcome theatre lovers from other meridians, the I.L. Caragiale National Theatre has partnered with the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, responding to its request to present, for the first time to the United States audience - made up primarily of Americans, but also of the Romanian diaspora - some of the branded shows from the NTB repertoire, within the programme entitled Digital Stage, developed by RCINY.
English subtitled recordings of these shows will be made available online by NTB, being broadcast at 8 pm (New York time), 3 am (Bucharest time).
The first broadcast of this series takes place on Saturday, June 27th, 2020 and offers American viewers the opportunity to watch for the first time, on the RCINY Facebook page, in live streaming, the show Lottery Tickets, adaptation of the eponymous short story by I.L. Caragiale, directed by Alexandru Dabija, a show from the current NTB repertoire, whose premiere took place in 2012, within the "Caragiale Year".
The show brought the director Alexandru Dabija the Best Director Award at the UNITER Gala in 2013 and two other awards to the set designer Helmut Stürmer: the Award for best scenography at the UNITER Gala and the Award for scenography at the Romanian Comedy Festival. The show participated in the first edition of the MITEM Festival ("Madach International Theatre Meeting"), organized by the National Theatre of Budapest in 2014, within the traditional Budapest Spring Festival, and in 2017 at the "EUROKONTEXT s.k." International Festival, in Bratislava, Slovakia, enjoying an excellent reception at both events.
We look forward to echoes of this American premiere in the virtual space, hoping that this partnership will pave the way for further initiatives, designed to stimulate interest in Romanian culture and a better knowledge thereof across the ocean, through high-quality projects.
The next premiere of the series Digital Stage will show The Tempestafter William Shakespeare (directed by Alexander Morfov), to be broadcast this summer by NTB for RCINY.
