The Brancoveanu Family
A performance about our ancestors and about us
Pause: No
Independent show hosted by the National Theatre of Bucharest. The responsibility for the quality and content of this event lies solely with the organiser!
The performance is narrated by Maria Brancoveanu, who spent the last part of her life at Surpatele Monastery, recounting the main moments of her husband and children's martyrdom. It is the subjective perspective of a woman who has endured great hardship, a mother who is trying to understand God's plan for her, her family, and her country. She knows that she can no longer do anything for her children in this human realm, but she wants to fight for the cause of honoring their sacrifice.
Through this modern and refined text, we aim to reach an audience of all ages and professions. We have a cultural-intellectual level, an emotional level, and, of course, a spiritual level. The play can be understood at any of these levels. It is a plea for supporting the idea of the Christian mother, for promoting the idea that the birth of the education took place in the church, etc. Its multiple levels help us present a page of history to everyone, and we hope to inspire a desire to learn more about the history of the Romanian people. We meet the great ruler and saint Constantin Brâncoveanu with his martyred sons, his wife Maria Brâncoveanu, who has been proposed for canonization, and we are also shown the exceptional portrait of Saint Antim Ivireanul. The creators of the show take a human, emotional approach through which they want to convey hope and bring strength in times of trouble.
The performance premiered in 2016 and is continuously staged both in Bucharest and across the country.
The soundtrack is very important, like another character, on the one hand because we have recorded Constantin Codrescu, who will narrate fragments from the Ballad of the Brancoveanu family from time to time with his warm, unmistakable voice, fragments that will help us better follow the narrative thread, glimpses of the historical past through the eyes of the present, and on the other hand, a soundtrack with Byzantine music.
The performance was recorded and broadcast by TVR.
