Who Needs Theatre?
The suspension of the NTB shows and other cultural activities with audience for a period of time that seems to extend beyond March 31st, 2020, has dramatic effects at financial level, risking the institution's collapse. Every day without performances, the theatre loses considerable amounts. These are intended for the functioning of the institution, for utility payments, for maintaining the building and, last but not least, for preparing and producing new shows, honouring copyright and paying external collaborators, mostly young actors.
All shows canceled during the crisis period will be rescheduled, with tickets already purchased remaining valid. Spectators who can afford to have the patience to reconvene at a later date with their favourite actors and the NTB shows they want to watch, are asked not to request reimbursement of tickets purchased for performances postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.*
Thus, it helps the theatre to carry out the activity of rehearsals and preparation of new premieres - behind the doors temporarily closed to the public.
Upon the exit of this dramatic episode which the entire world is currently undergoing, we assure you that returning to the theatre halls will help us all recover our smile and heal more quickly from trauma!
If you love the theatre and artists, please be supportive of us!
* ”A part of the Hungarian audience has decided not to claim the money on the tickets from the concerts and theatre shows postponed or canceled, in order to support the cultural environments tried by the Covid-19 epidemic, writes Le Figaro, according to news.ro. The proposal of a Hungarian citizen was unexpectedly received on the internet. He urged citizens to stop demanding reimbursement for tickets purchased at shows canceled because of the epidemic with the new coronavirus.”
Ion Caramitru, the manager of the National Theatre of Bucharest sent a message during the rehearsals he holds with director Carmen Lidia Vidu at NTB, for the show "Romanian Diary. 1989 "
" I address the faithful spectators of the National Theatre of Bucharest, I address those in love with our theatre, the Romanian theatre in general, with the request to consider the idea of not claiming now, immediately, the reimbursement of the money for the tickets that they have purchased in advance, because the National Theatre commits to reschedule these shows when we have the opportunity to do so. And the tickets keep their validity. It would be a gesture of solidarity with what is happening today in the country and, expressly, in theatres.
The National Theatre has to defer the current activity for 45 shows, because we have reached the performance of scheduling our shows in advance with almost two months, so that people can buy tickets early. It would be much more useful for us if you accepted this ... let us call it an agreement and a gesture of solidarity. Because you would help us immensely in being able to naturally carry on our activity. It is very complicated to give back, day by day, the proceeds for almost 1400-1500 spectators that we had every day. You realize what an ordeal! And yet, besides that, the gesture that we ask for is happening in other countries. That is where this is understood and we are also calling for your understanding. The shows will be seen, the tickets will be respected, your citizenship will be honoured, and we will be the ones to thank you once again with a bow to the ground. Thank you! " Ion Caramitru
In order to be informed in due time, we invite you to continue to follow us on our social media pages and on the NTB website. For now, we are waiting for you in the online space. We hope to see you soon, at the theatre!
