The Nouveau Criminals on the Grand NTB Stage!
16 February 2019The I.L. Caragiale National Theatre of Bucharest announces the first performances of the The Nouveau Criminals by Edna Mazia, translated by Etgard Bitel, directed by Ion Caramitru, which shall take place on Saturday, February 16th, Sunday February 17th, 2019, Sunday, February 24th and Friday, March 1st at The Grand Hall, starting from 7.30 p.m. Designated by Haaretz Magazine as "First Lady of the Israeli Theatre", Edna Mazia first became a screenwriter, then a playwright and theatre director, followed by philosophy and drama studies, and her career was crowned with recognition by the audience and the specialized criticism. Among her numerous plays, those which enjoyed a special appreciation were the Family Story - rewarded in 1997 with the Meir Margalit Prize (after the name of a famous Israeli actor of the 20th century) and the Lea Goldberg Award, then only two years later, for the Rebels, the writer would be declared Playwright of the Year 1998-1999, a recognition doubled by a new Meir Margalit Award. In Romania, the most famous piece of Edna Mazia is the one in 2011, Games in the Backyard, director Bobi Pricop's debut exam, taken over by Act Theatre. With Nouveau Criminals, the author, who was also the director for this play performed with great success by Israel's Cameri Theatre, offers us a comedy of stark topicality, oscillating between laughter and tears, about a family hoping to regain their lost well-being. It's a story about the temptation of money, easy gains on not exactly Orthodox ways, risky maneuvers of survival, and the cumbersome routine of domestic cares. A bitter comedy, reserved exclusively for adults, with generous scores and extraordinary actors - guided with psychological finesse by Ion Caramitru - the director, gives you the opportunity to meet with a five star cast on the great stage of the Bucharest National Theatre. The amazing situations and characters that trigger them are brought to the scene by the actors: Virginia Mirea - invited to join NTB with this role, Alexandrina Halic, Andrei Finti, Silviu Biriş, Afrodita Androne, Teodora Mareş, Ileana Olteanu, Aylin Cadir / Diana Sar, Cosmina Olariu, George Piştereanu, Daniel Badale, Mihai Verbitchi, Alexandru Hasnaş. In other roles: Viorel Florea, Alexandru Popescu, Nicoleta Tase, Aris Bănuţoiu. The welcoming home of a once wealthy family is the stage creation of Florilena Popescu Farcasanu - as well as the costumes of the show, the lighting of the lighting designer Chris Jaeger, the choreography of Florin Fieroiu and the musical arrangements made by Călin Topa. You shall laugh at the challenges of dealing with the "nouveau criminals" ... The humour and wisdom of an honest contemporary family shall persuade you that it is worthwhile facing your fate even if you becomes its toy, even if the whole world has gone mad and .. even though "it's all but ... a great mess" !!! So dare and be welcome to the generous home of a respectable family, where a fancy business flourishes ...! The official premiere of the show is scheduled for Thursday, March 7th, 2019, from 7.30 p.m. in the presence of the author. The duration of the show is 2 hours 50 minutes, with a break. Tickets are available at the NTB Box Office, in the Grand Hall foyer, as well as online on www.mystage.ro. Translated by Simona Nichiteanu
The National Theatre of Kishinev Returns to NTB with Two Premieres
26 January 2019Two of the most recent premieres of the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre of Kishinev are performed this year also on the TNB stage, during the tour Romanian Theatre in Bucharest, Iasi and Kishinev. On January 26th and 27th, 2019, from 7.00 p.m., at the Studio Hall, with only one representation each, there will be presented: The Carnival - a show on texts by Caragiale and The Cherry Orchard, by Chekhov. In the vision of Alexa Visarion, who signs the adaptation, the Carnival presented by the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre of Kishinev in Bucharest is our "everyday carnival" that sends its masks, with the energy of despair, to the intersection of the last three centuries (19th, 20th, 21st); disturbing interference where everything is maculating, degrading frenetically, becoming derisory ... We are betraying while weeping, laughing while betraying ... "- as the author of the show states. The cast comprises actors well-known to our audience: Anatol Durbala, Ion Mocanu, Petru Hadarca, Ghenadie Galcă, Iurie Focsa, Ana Tkacenko, Valentin Zorila, Mihai Zubcu, Dan Melnic, Olesea Svecla / Cornelia Maros - Suveica, Angela Ciobanu, Nicolae Ghereg, Doriana Zubcu - Marginean, Draga – Dumitrita Drumi, Ecaterina Mardari. This impressive cast of the Carnival at the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre must encompass all of us with dedication, craftsmanship and virtuosity in a fascinating delirium ... without stopping ... without stumbling ... without opposition ... without escape ... endlessly ... Perfect! - That's what Alexa Visarion's creed sounds like. Or, in other words, even in Caragiale's words, "actors on the stage must be possessed, have the devil within them, through the eyes, through the eyebrows, through the mouth, through the fingertips, through all the pores, to exorcise the demon and throw it on the audience. " The Cherry Orchard by A.P. Chekhov is the premiere of the National Theater of Kishinev this month (more precisely, January 19th) and is based on the famous play that Chekhov considers a comedy, Stanislavski - a tragedy, and on the billboard of the premiere in 1904, he wrote drama. In the vision of director Alexandru Cozub it becomes a tragicomedy, a delightful show about the thirst for shared love, the need for meaning and fulfillment. The scenography of the show is created by Iurie Matei (scenery) and Tatiana Popescu (costumes). Three generations of egocentric, naive, wasting and gabbering characters do not listen to each other, nor will they: they are only united by the Orchard, more from recollections than the one blossoming under the windows. The Cherry Orchard of Kishinev provokes, by speaking of the necessity of change, indifference and resignation: the broken string can only be replaced: if, like old Firs, “you no longer understand anything ... everything has collapsed”, you are locked in the deserted house. The roller of transition crushes everything. The parental home is not for sale is a slogan that sounds well in a song, not in reality. Orchards are meant to remain, immaculate, in memory. In the cast: Margareta Pantea, Ecaterina Mardari, Doina Severin, Nicolae Suveica, Victor Nofit, Alexandru Plesca, Petru Oistric, Mihaela Damian-Oistric, Ghenadie Galca, Ana Tkacenko, Nicolae Darie, Iurie Focsa. The duration of each show exceeds 2 hours, so both performances will benefit from one pause. Tickets were put up for sale at the NTB Box Office and online on www.mystage.ro. "Once Upon a Time in Romania", a story with simple people on the shore of Good Hope
11 January 2019On Friday, January 11th, 2019, from 8.00 p.m., on the stage of the "I.L. Caragiale" National Theatre of Bucharest, there will be an official premiere of Once Upon a Time in Romania, a show directed by Dragoş Huluba, where the word mingles with pantomime, step, music and exquisite gag.An artist who is overwhelmingly exuberant when assuming his role as director, Dragos Huluba is in this position in front of a new debut on a National Stage. Twenty years after graduating from the faculty, with more than 20 representations performed on the stage of the Comedy Theatre in which he has been part since 2004 and several others directed by him, including the award-winning Rencontres 2007, he could be seen on the NTB stages in Dan Puric's performances "Hic sunt leones" (2002), "The 150" (2003) and, until recently, in "Royal Fashion".Once Upon a Time In Romania is a story with simple people placed in exceptional situations, based on a script elaborated by Dragos Huluba alongside Eduard Adam and Violeta Huluba. The authors are also the performers who, alongside Ileana Olteanu, bring to you this simple and conquering story about ordinary people who manage to survive with dignity, love and humour the great turbulence into which history throws them. So, four actors, costumes, music, dance, video projections, lights, pantomime, a few words, humour, nostalgia ... ingredients of a necessary show. Why is it necessary? Because "Once Upon a Time in Romania" is the show of nowadays’ generation even though, paradoxically, its story has lasted for over 100 years. As in a play with time, the stories are told either on fast forward, or fast rewind. From the glamorous world of the interwar period, with gorgeous dresses, men in tuxedos, and walks on Calea Victoriei, to the gray years of the communist period in which an orange can illuminate a whole world one winter evening to the crazy years of our days with Mall openings and the alienation of the individual under the stress of modern life, "Once Upon a Time in Romania" invites you to this carousel of history, in which you shall laugh, applaud, smile with melancholy, or shed a fleeting tear. A project conducted under the auspices of the Ion Sava Centre for Theatrical Research and Creation. The preview is scheduled for Saturday, January 5th, 2019, from 8.00 p.m. in the Painting Hall.Tickets are available at the NTB Box Office, in the foyer of the Grand Hall, as well as online on www.mystage.ro. With The Forest of the Hanged, Radu Afrim Extracts History from the Museum!
15 December 2018A powerful and modern text, revealed otherwise by a director who does not shy away from challenges: The Forest of the Hanged, after Liviu Rebreanu's novel, in the vision of Radu Afrim, is ready for the first encounter with the audience, on Saturday, December 15th, 2018, on the grand stage of the National Theatre of Bucharest. Radu Afrim's show after The Forest of the Hanged by Liviu Rebreanu, uncovers a tremendous poetry of a powerful and modern text and aims at addressing first of all young people of nowadays. Reinterpreting in his own key a major work of Romanian literature, the director transposes it into his imaginative universe, so specific, he uncovers new meanings, starting from the premise that Rebreanu's novel is not a war novel, but a psychological one. „I do not wish to enact Rebreanu's book, I want to question a little what happened to us in these one hundred years and where we stand ... It might be ambitious, risky, kitsch, wrong, but I wish to face those soldiers who fought for something then, although many did not know what they were fighting for, with young people of nowadays, with dialogues and questions… What did you do in 100 years, who were we at your age, what have we done… It seems to me that we are talking too much about our recent history as something of a museum. I want to extract these soldiers from the museum, and this book, and see if there is a dialogue between nowaday’s people and those of yore. It is actually a Centenary commission, Caramitru suggested me to make The Forest of the Hanged, and Caramitru has a good hand, he suggested I should also do Scourge... It is the only time a theatre manager tells me what to do and it helps me ... But far from me this exaggerated festive feeling around the Centenary ... " explained in a recent meeting with the press, director Radu Afrim. Far from any form of nationalism, the show provokes a lucid reflection on the state of the nation, a clear confrontation with our historical past, a dialogue between the voice of the present and the voice of history. A deaf, whispered or blunt, insinuating or reverberating voice through which the events of a world torn by massacres spell their true name in time, a voice that bears the specific tonality and intonation of director Radu Afrim. Using the entire surface of the huge stage of the Great Hall, stage designer Cosmin Florea and his team create an acting space of a rare spectacularity, in line with the directorial vision. The following actors give a soul to the novel, but also to Afrim’s universe: Alexandru Potocean (in the role of Apostol Bologa), Marius Manole, Richard Bovnoczki, Ciprian Nicula, Raluca Aprodu, Istvan Teglas, Vitalie Bichir, Natalia Calin, Ada Galeş, Florin Alexandru Sălceanu, Emilian Mernea, Liviu Popa, Cristian Bota, Alexandru Chindris, Octavian Voina, Andrei Atabay, Vlad Galer, Flavia Giurgiu, Cosmin Ilie, George Olar, Ciprian Valea, Tiberiu Enache, Silviu Mircescu, Bogdan Iacob, Vlad Ionuţ Popescu, and Lenutza Purja, Teodora Purja, two popular folk song performers. The choreography is signed by Andrea Gavriliu. Video mapping: Andrei Cozlac. The Forest of the Hanged is a comprehensive, profound, restless enactment, signed by a special artist, whose talent has long exceeded the country borders, and who is said to have no grandiloquence or other attributes of origin, simply Romanian. And the disturbing question underlying the dramatic events evoked in the show is one that, defying festive exaggerations, requires a deeper reflection: How do we, as contemporaries, relate to our countrymen 100 years ago! ... A reflection addressed to an audience of all ages. The premiere of the show will take place on Sunday, December 16th, 2018, from 7:00 p.m., in the Grand Hall. The next performance is sold out for December 19th. Translated by Simona Nichiteanu

For the first time at NTB: 50 Seconds ... a condensed lifetime!
13 December 2018Daniel Oltean, DIICOT prosecutor and theatrologist, has offered UNITER, for the Best Romanian Play of the Year 2017, and, on this occasion, the National Theatre of Bucharest, the Romanian play capable of igniting a special interest. Its title is 50 Seconds, and the premiere takes place on December 13th and 14th, 2018 at the Black Box Hall, directed by Eugen Gyemant. With a simple, nervous and piercing phrase, with a glance that looks beyond the palpable and the daily life, 50 Seconds captures the conflict of ideas, the tantrum to understand one’s own existential accidents when they occur. Two men are being examined during an investigation. One killed his mother, wants to confess and end as soon as possible, the other wants to know the truth, or the real perpetrator, or the circumstances that led to the abominable deed. The two men are studying and investigating each other, although only one has the legal right to do it. The result is unpredictable! ... The author-prosecutor is the one who investigates, with care, the turmoil of the being in front of him, then the psychologist tormented by his own questions, then the playwright who puts them into words. The answer is unexpected! Daniel Oltean, born in 1974 in Targu Mures, is a graduate of law and philosophy, drama and dramatic writing. A special author. With a unique professional path. Since 1996, he has been a DIICOT prosecutor in Targu Mures. He was playwright for “The Stone” by Marius von Mayenburg, directed by Theodor-Cristian Popescu, and for "Offline" directed by Laurentiu Blaga (2018 Targu Mures National Theatre), as well as a performance consultant (“Triple Point”, directed by Bogdan (Coordinated by Stefan Peca, directed by Ovidiu Caita, Studio Theater, Targu Mures, 2016) and co-author of the dramatic text for the show "The Mutants". The intricate game that takes place predominantly in the surprising maize of the mind is embodied by the actors: Alexandru Voicu (son), Lucian Iftime (criminal prosecutor) and Diana Dumbrava (mother). Scenography: Mara Nicola. Original Music: Alexei Turcan. Director Eugen Gyemant, at his first NTB enactment, invites you to discover yourselves in one of these characters; or, in turn, in all three ... On the stages of Bucharest theatres and across the country, starting with 2008, Gyemant has successfully enacted a number of important texts, such as Look Back in Anger by John Osborne (Best Director Award, Comedy Cares about the Youth, 2008), The Golden Calf by Ilf and Petrov, ArCuB, 2011 Bullets over Lipscani by Woody Allen, 2012 (award for best director at the International Marathon of Independent Theatre - Bucharest Fringe 2012), Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, Godot Cafe Theater, 2012, The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh, Theater Act, 2015 (Best Performance at the Undercloud 2016 Theatre Festival, awarded at the Martin McDonagh International Festival in Perm, Russia, as well as at the International Festival ArtOkraina in St. Petersburg), many other performances, the most recent ones being Leonce and Lena by Georg Büchner, Unteatru and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kessey, at Sfantu Gheorghe, 2018. The show 50 Seconds shall premiere on December 13th and 14th at the Black Box Hall from 8.00 p.m. The next performance is scheduled for Wednesday, December 19th, 2018. Translated by Simona Nichiteanu

The Silent Parrot - Nearly True Stories about a Nearly Forgotten Spy, for the first time at TNB!
08 December 2018One of the most renowned Romanian film directors, the multi-award-winning Nae Caranfil, three decades after his debut in cinematography, is at the end of 2018 at the brink of a bold actor: even if at the beginning of his career, theatrical performances in Bucharest and Piatra Neamt, the director is now in the first collaboration with the National Theatre, where, with a personal project, he signs both the script and the direction of one of the most delicious stories about diplomacy, politics, espionage and alcove - in a surprising comic mix. The Silent Parrot - Nearly True Stories about a Nearly Forgotten Spy, a two-act play by Nae Caranfil, is an incredible but real story, centered around one of the most enigmatic and fascinating figures of the 18th century. By his true name Charles-Geneviève-Louis-Auguste-André-Thimothée d'Eon de Beaumont, the transvestite spy Charles d'Eon / Lia de Beaumont, historically known as the Knight d'Eon, lived half as a woman. More precisely, 33 years of his life he lived travestied as a woman and another 49 as a man, confusing the world, intriguing it, seducing it, and almost always achieving substantial personal advantages. An ambivalent being, sometimes treacherous, sometimes wild, but faithful to his King Louis XV, he became a legend as the first secret agent of French history. A show of real historical characters and deeds, rife with humour, charm, boldness, about political and amorous intrigue, held at one of the most extravagant imperial courts of the world, that of Russia, during the reign of Elisabeth I. At Studio Hall, in Dragos Buhagiar’s baroque scenography, Nae Caranfil brings on stage a society oscillating in a perpetual and dangerous game between truth and lie. In the cast of the show: Vlad Logigan and Claudiu Bleont - starring Miruna Bilèi, Raluca Petra, Mihai Calota, Eduard Cirlan, Magda Catone, Tomi Cristin, Marius Rizea, Alexandru Georgescu, Dragos Stemate, Eduard Adam, Cosmin Dominte, Axel Moustache, Dragos Dumitru, Mihai Muntenita, Daniel Badale. An exquisite artist, whom the audience and critics have been able to admire more than once as a screenwriter and director, while specialist juries have rewarded his talent at numerous national and international festivals, Nae Caranfil is the author of movies, such as E pericoloso sporgersi, Asphalt Tango, Dolce far niente, Philanthropy, The Rest is Silence, Closer to the Moon, 6.9 on the Richter Scale, which have brought him international acclaim since his debut, constantly maintained by his subsequent achievements. The first performances are scheduled for December 8th and 9th. The next show, the last in 2018, is scheduled for December 13th. The show resumes on Thursday, January 10th, 2019. All shows start at 7.00 p.m. Translated by Simona Nichiteanu
