The NTB-online schedule, in the week of April 27 - May 3, 2020

27 April 2020

The show Scourge, directed by Radu Afrim, is broadcast during the weekend! Starting this week, the NTB-Online Conferences schedule is changing. The conferences will be broadcast daily, from Monday to Thursday, one title each, starting from 2.00 p.m. However, the NTB online conferences remain available for viewing on NTB's youtube channel even after the end of the live broadcast. As of April 24th, 2020, the Bucharest National Theatre has launched the programme NTB Online Shows. In order for the spectators to have more opportunities to watch the performances from the archive of the National Theatre of Bucharest, we will broadcast a title every week. The show of the week will be broadcast, however, in a live streaming system on each of the three days of the weekend: Friday, starting with 4.00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, at 6.00 p.m. NTB online shows can only be watched at the announced times, no longer being available online after the end of the live broadcast. Conferences you can see this week: April 27th: Radu Penciulescu - The Long Path of the Text towards the stage (held on June 13th, 2010) April 28th: Alex Ștefănescu - Who Needs Literature Today? (held on March 22th, 2015) April 29th: Constanța Vintilă-Ghițulescu - Amusement and Banqueting in Phanariot Bucharest (18th-19th Centuries) (held on April 2nd, 2017) April 30th: Gheorghe Florescu - Our Daily Coffee and Dissent (held on September 20th, 2009). Scourge after I.L. Caragiale is this weekend's show, broadcast on the NTB Youtube channel (http://www.youtube.com/c/TeatrulNaţionalILCaragialeBucurești). The Scourge of the classic, directed by the innovative Radu Afrim, ended in force the very successful programme, 2012 - Caragiale Year at NTB. 7 years since its premiere, the show that inaugurated the Media Hall, one of the halls with which the theatre was enriched after the reconfiguration, is preparing for a new release in the world. With the same surprising scenery, this weekend, Scourge will celebrate another… premiere, moving from the space of a theatre to the virtual space. The new premiere is due to the images recorded by the operator Mihai Bodea and the editing by Radu Stancu. Scourge, to be seen now: online! A strong sensory show, out of the ordinary, intriguing, maybe, but it will certainly not go unnoticed this time either. Crina Semciuc, Marius Manole, Mihai Călin and Emilian Oprea create an effervescent world, to which the music composed by Luiza Zan and Valentin Luca adds a strange thrill. A setting of the urban daily life, but loaded with telluric details, signed by Vanda Maria Sturdza, extended in a surreal parade of costumes by Cosmin Florea replenishes the obsessive atmosphere of the show. We also recommend that you, joining the director, read or reread Caragiale's drama before you see the show. You will better understand the intentions and vision of the show's creator, as well as his statement from the time of the premiere: “I rarely attempted established texts, but when I did, I felt the need to leave traces. It would be useless to have a prudent reading at Scourge (…) I walked with Lorca, I got familiar with Chekhov ... do you think that Caragiale will refuse me ?! ” Radu Afrim From May 1st to 3rd, 2020, with a single performance, on Friday - from 4.00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday - from 6.00 p.m., on the Youtube channel of the National Theatre, Scourge!     Translated by Simona Nichiteanu

Who Needs Theatre?

14 March 2020

The suspension of the NTB shows and other cultural activities with audience for a period of time that seems to extend beyond March 31st, 2020, has dramatic effects at financial level, risking the institution's collapse. Every day without performances, the theatre loses considerable amounts. These are intended for the functioning of the institution, for utility payments, for maintaining the building and, last but not least, for preparing and producing new shows, honouring copyright and paying external collaborators, mostly young actors. All shows canceled during the crisis period will be rescheduled, with tickets already purchased remaining valid. Spectators who can afford to have the patience to reconvene at a later date with their favourite actors and the NTB shows they want to watch, are asked not to request reimbursement of tickets purchased for performances postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.* Thus, it helps the theatre to carry out the activity of rehearsals and preparation of new premieres - behind the doors temporarily closed to the public. Upon the exit of this dramatic episode which the entire world is currently undergoing, we assure you that returning to the theatre halls will help us all recover our smile and heal more quickly from trauma! If you love the theatre and artists, please be supportive of us! * ”A part of the Hungarian audience has decided not to claim the money on the tickets from the concerts and theatre shows postponed or canceled, in order to support the cultural environments tried by the Covid-19 epidemic, writes Le Figaro, according to news.ro. The proposal of a Hungarian citizen was unexpectedly received on the internet. He urged citizens to stop demanding reimbursement for tickets purchased at shows canceled because of the epidemic with the new coronavirus.” Ion Caramitru, the manager of the National Theatre of Bucharest sent a message during the rehearsals he holds with director Carmen Lidia Vidu at NTB, for the show "Romanian Diary. 1989 " " I address the faithful spectators of the National Theatre of Bucharest, I address those in love with our theatre, the Romanian theatre in general, with the request to consider the idea of not claiming now, immediately, the reimbursement of the money for the tickets that they have purchased in advance, because the National Theatre commits to reschedule these shows when we have the opportunity to do so. And the tickets keep their validity. It would be a gesture of solidarity with what is happening today in the country and, expressly, in theatres. The National Theatre has to defer the current activity for 45 shows, because we have reached the performance of scheduling our shows in advance with almost two months, so that people can buy tickets early. It would be much more useful for us if you accepted this ... let us call it an agreement and a gesture of solidarity. Because you would help us immensely in being able to naturally carry on our activity. It is very complicated to give back, day by day, the proceeds for almost 1400-1500 spectators that we had every day. You realize what an ordeal! And yet, besides that, the gesture that we ask for is happening in other countries. That is where this is understood and we are also calling for your understanding. The shows will be seen, the tickets will be respected, your citizenship will be honoured, and we will be the ones to thank you once again with a bow to the ground. Thank you! " Ion Caramitru In order to be informed in due time, we invite you to continue to follow us on our social media pages and on the NTB website. For now, we are waiting for you in the online space. We hope to see you soon, at the theatre! Translated by Simona Nichiteanu

Beginners premiere

03 March 2020

The "IL Caragiale" National Theatre of Bucharest announces the premiere of the performance Beginners, on March 3rd and 4th, 2020, at the Black Box Hall, directed by Bobi Pricop, on a text by Tim Crouch, one of the most unconventional contemporary English playwrights. Creator of theatrical performances employing multimedia technologies and exploring the borders of the dramatic art, Bobi Pricop is at the third encounter with the British author, after An Oak set at the Youth Theatre in Piatra-Neamț and The Author, staged at the "Marin Sorescu" Theatre in Craiova. Beginners - A show about the invisible border between childhood and adulthood, the children we used to be and the adults we will become. A show full of fantasy and mystery, of situations and many surprises, with adult and child actors, a staging that will put our senses to trial, playing at the same time with our minds. "Each text by Tim Crouch proposes a new, surprising experience. I think he is one of the most interesting contemporary playwrights because he constantly tests the boundaries of theatricality, the relationship between the audience and the stage, the roles we play in the world and the ways in which we are perceived by others. I am interested in how he experiments with new, sometimes risky, artistic forms to talk about certain fundamental, universal realities. In Beginners, this can be clearer than ever. That is why I wanted so much to put on this show, which I think resonates acutely in each one of us. Because he talks about childhood, the stories we learn when we are young and the ones we create about ourselves later. ” Bobi Pricop The cast comprises the actors Raluca Aprodu, Ada Galeș, Alexandru Potocean, Istvan Teglas, Ciprian Nicula, as well as the children Chloe Basu / Eva-Ilinca Crudu / Maria Mustache, Maria Luana Colica / Erica Mihaela Tanasov, Rareș Gheorghe / Victor Vasilescu, Radu Anghelina / Ștefan Popa. The stage design is signed by Nikola Toromanov, who also worked with Bobi Pricop on the shows Terror by Ferdinand von Schirach (Târgu-Mureș National Theatre) and Radio by Eric Bogossian (Craiova National Theatre). The Bulgarian scenographer has collaborated with NTB, obtaining the 2012 Uniter Prize for The Visit by Fr. Dürrenmatt, directed by Al. Morfov. The team of filmmakers is completed by Eduard Gabia (score and stage movement), Dan Basu (drawing and animations), who are entering a new collaboration with Bobi Pricop.
