Record number of long-running performances in the current season!
25 June 2022More than 650 performances of 3 plays from the interwar period at NTB! Three of the longest-running Romanian plays in the repertoire of the "I.L. Caragiale" National Theatre from Bucharest rounded up an impressive number of performances this season. These plays are: Little Hell by Mircea Ștefănescu, The Man Who Saw Death by Victor Eftimiu and Allegro, ma non troppo by Ion Minulescu. All three are based on beloved comedies written in the interwar period by important writers of our literature. And all three will have a final encounter with the public this weekend, towards the end of the season. We highly recommend them! Mircea Ștefănescu's Little Hell - one of the longest running comedies performed on the stage of the "I.L. Caragiale" National Theatre in Bucharest, will have its last performance of this season on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at 7 pm, at the Studio Hall. Almost 10 years after its premiere, "Little Hell" continues to fill the theatre's halls, offering the audience an extremely topical subject, even though the play was written in 1948. Through the fun and irony of the lines, the mastery of construction and the dialogue, the show proves to be a true human comedy, in which those who come to see it will certainly recognize themselves. Recently, the performance "Little Hell" celebrated 300 performances on the stage of the "I.L. Caragiale" National Theatre in Bucharest. With a captivating cast: Rodica Popescu Bitănescu, Ilinca Goia / Iuliana Moise, Liviu Lucaci, Marius Rizea, Dragoș Stemate, Daniel Badale, Fulvia Folosea, the staging proposed by director Mircea Cornișteanu continues the success of the premiere. We are waiting for you on Saturday, June 25, at 7 pm, at the Studio Hall of the "I.L. Caragiale" National Theatre to enjoy the last performance of this season of "Little Hell" by Mircea Ștefănescu! On the same Saturday evening, June 25, 2022, at 8 pm, the last performance of the season of The Man Who Saw Death, Victor Eftimiu's comedy staged at the National Theatre in Bucharest by Dan Tudor, as director, will also be played on the stage of the Pictura Hall, a comedy that reached its 200th performance on November 13, 2021. "The Man Who Saw Death", a play from 1928, proves with each performance, to the delight of the audience, the topicality of the lines and the freshness of the comic situations. The late critic Mircea Ghițulescu wrote about the subject of the play and its inter-war recipe: "Victor Eftimiu's comedy still arouses the interest of theatres today because of the main character, the Vagabond, a kind of funny, amusing and intelligent runagate. He will succeed, by means of parallel strategies, in imposing his savior as the favorite among the candidates for mayor of the town". The role is exhibitionist, insolent and funambulist - wrote the critic, somehow anticipating the creation, on the double score, entrusted to the very young actor at the time of the premiere, today one of the most beloved actors of NTB, Lari Giorgescu. The generous dramatic score will give you the opportunity to meet a series of memorable characters, played by several top class actors of NTB: Costel Constantin, Adela Mărculescu, Marius Bodochi, Florentina Țilea, Răzvan Oprea. The set design is by Corina Grămoșteanu and the music by Gabriel Basarabescu. We invite you to spend a relaxing weekend in the company of an extraordinary cast, bringing to life an ageless farce! The performance Allegro, ma non troppo by Ion Minulescu, directed by Răzvan Popa, will be performed on Sunday, June 26, 2022, at 8 pm at the Pictura Hall for the 150th time! "Allegro, ma non troppo" is an ingenious blend of theatre and reality, in which an adultery is committed under the eyes of the husband, in the guise of a fictional play. A plea for freshness in theatre, which must draw inspiration from life. A sentimental comedy with love entanglements and dramatic suspense. A satire of morals with a millionaire, a wife and a playwright, along with other picturesque characters - a mistress, a middleman, a maid - will keep you, for an hour and a half, captivated by the charm and flavour of the inter-war era. Răzvan Popa revealed why he chose this play before his first meeting with the audience: "I found it strikingly topical. It all resembled what is happening at the moment. Arranged marriages, which break down at the touch of the long arm of the law, between millionaires and millionaire politicians, artists who can't find their place in society, made-to-order stars, millionaires who become stars to become even richer... This is what attracted me to the text of this writer, an almost unknown dramatic author, as well as Minulescu is known as a symbolist poet. A dramatic author who was a great success in his time, director of the National Theatre in Bucharest in 1926, Ion Minulescu (1881 - 1944) is known today mainly as the poet of the novels. Although during his lifetime the writer believed that posterity would recognize him mainly for his plays, literary history chose a different destiny for him. His theatre deserves to be rediscovered even today, decades after the first performances at the Bucharest National Theatre, for its lively dialogues, alert humor, naturalness of story, intellectual verve, originality of writing." The last tickets for these 3 exceptional comedies are expecting you at the Theatre Box Office and online at www.tnb.ro. Translated by Andreea Codrea-Boeriu

The Theater without a Name presents The Tempest
31 May 2022On tour at TNB, The Theater without a Name* from Kishinev proposes a new version of Shakespeare's Tempest, directed by Mihai Țărnă. On May 31 2022, at 7.30 pm, you are invited to the Studio Hall of TNB for the unique performance of William Shakespeare's The Tempest, a recent production by director Mihai Țărnă, in which the role of Prospero is played by Vitalie Rusu, an established actor of the stage from Basarabia. Actor, theatre and film director, scriptwriter, with a Master's degree in theatre direction from the Arts Institute of Kishinev (D.E.A.), completed with studies in film direction at the International Film School from Paris (2001-2002) and a PhD at the University Charles de Gaulle, Lille 3, Mihai Țărnă is currently based in France, where he is head of the "Art of the Actor" department at the International Film School from Paris (E.I.C.A.R.). He has directed dozens of plays on stages in the Republic of Moldova and in France, staging titles from the great drama (Shakespeare, Moliere, Gogol, Chekhov, Eugène Ionesco...) and has made short films and made his debut in feature films as a director and/or screenwriter. The year 2019, when he directed "The Tempest", is also the year in which he staged Eugène Ionesco's '' Exit the King'' at the Théâtre du Gymnase in Paris, France (presented in Madrid), and it also the year when he signed the direction for his 40th show in his two and a half decades of artistic activity. In the version conceived by director Mihai Țărnă, the famous Shakespearean play is a drama with elements of comedy, about the fall and rise of man, the redemption of souls and their eternal loss. On the island of Prospero, the Shakespearean history of the world unfolds succinctly - power, murder, revolt, violence, love. The Tempest is the drama of lost illusions, of the bitter wisdom and of the fragile, but stubborn, hope. A prestigious actor of the stages from Basarabia, Vitalie Rusu has worked as an actor and director at the "A.S. Pushkin" Musical - Dramatic Theatre (today the "Mihai Eminescu" National Theatre) from Kishinev, and has been the chief director of this theatre since 1985. Between 1999 and 2003 he was a diplomat at the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Bucharest. In 1973 he was awarded the honorary title of Artist Emeritus and, in 1983, he was awarded the title People's Artist. In 2011, Vitalie Rusu was awarded the Order of the Republic and in 2013 the National Prize. In his acting career of over 50 years, he has played 80 theatre and film parts: Hlestakov in "The Reviewer" by N. V. Gogol, Mercutio in "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare, Alecu - "Carnival in Iași" by V. Alecsandri, Gheorghe - " The Mother With Three Daughters-In-Law" by Ion Creangă, and now you have the opportunity to see him in one of the most complex Shakespearean roles, Prospero in The Tempest! Tickets are available at the TNB Box Office and online at www.tnb.ro *The Theater without a Name is not a theater without identity, nor one without roots. It represents a new direction of the Theater for Children and Youth, which later became the "Ginta Latină" (Romance gentes) Revue Theater. So, TFN comes as a continuity and development of a theatrical tradition. Through this change, the theater wanted to offer its chance for a new life and a new way of expression and communication with the spectator. Translated by Andreea Codrea-Boeriu

NTB participates in the “Kontakt” International Theatre Festival in Torun
26 May 2022“Kontakt” International Theatre Festival from Torun - a Polish window to the European and world theatre On Thursday, May 26, 2022, in Torun, Poland, the “I.L. Caragiale” National Theatre will present An (Un)usually Free Script Based on Chekhov, directed by Radu Afrim, a guest performance at the "Kontakt" International Theatre Festival. The performance will start at 6 pm (local time), on the main stage of the very modern Jordanki Cultural and Congress Centre in Torun (a masterpiece of the modern architecture by the Spanish architect Fernando Menis) and will be followed by a meeting with the press and the audience. The performance will also be broadcast live via the Festival's own online streaming platform (VOD). After two years in an online format due to the pandemic, with the edition from 2022, the “Kontakt” Festival is resuming in full, in a hybrid format, with live, on-stage performances complemented by live streamings and online broadcastings. Organized since 1991 by the “Wilam Horzyca” Theatre in Toruń, Poland, the “Kontakt” International Theatre Festival was founded by the well-known Polish director Krystyna Meissner (1933 - 2022). Over the years, the “Kontakt” Festival has become an important meeting point between different cultural spaces, sometimes difficult to reconcile in the new geo-political reality. "The format of the festival created by Krystyna Meissner is still relevant today, so it's not worth revolutionizing it by force. I would like to come back to the idea of “Kontakt” as a festival that refreshes the vision of the Polish audiences, creates new theatre leaders in Europe, and shows how much - again! - we need a common dialogue, beyond the social and ideological prejudices and the Polish particularities"- says Renata Derejczyk, the current director of the “Wilam Horzyca” Theatre in Torun. The quality of the festival is primarily due to the artistic value of the performances presented, chosen on the basis of a demanding selection carried out by a jury set up for this purpose. Four foreign performances were invited to this year's festival. For the first time in an international tour, the performance presented by the “I.L. Caragiale” National Theatre from Bucharest is part of this selection, together with those from: Switzerland - "Songs without lyrics", directed by Thom Luz (Bernetta Theaterproduktionen, Zurich), Czech Republic - "Lost Illusions" dramatization after Balzac, directed by Jan Mikulasek (Teatr na Zabradli, Prague) and Lithuania - "Tales from the Viennese Forest", dramatization after Odon von Horvath, directed by Yanna Ross (Vilnius Youth Theatre). Radu Afrim's Three Sisters. An (Un)usually Free Script Based on Chekhov offers a remix of a classic play, a hallucinating and highly topical revival of a story told hundreds of times before. A powerful, original and shocking production that, like all the works made by Afrim, will take the viewers out of their comfort zone. "...is not a "Chekhovian" enactment in the established sense of the term, but it offers a distinct, recognizable vision, in the style that imposed Radu Afrim as one of the most unconventional and gifted theatre directors in Romania" - attributes on which the Polish selection has also relied. The play Three Sisters. An (Un)usually Free Script Based on Chekhov features a cast made up of some of the best-known actors of the moment and is produced in collaboration with a team of innovative artists with whom Radu Afrim constantly collaborates (Irina Moscu - set design, Andrei Cozlac - video design, Călin Țopa - sound design). The cast includes Raluca Aprodu, Natalia Călin, Flavia Giurgiu, Marius Manole, Emilian Oprea, Istvan Teglas, Irina Movilă, Ada Galeș, Ciprian Nicula, Florin Călbăjos. We wish them good luck! The Chekhovian Seagull, directed by Eugen Jebeleanu, breaks the monopoly of theatrical clichés
14 May 2022The “I.L. Caragiale” National Theater announces the premiere of a new performance on the stage of Ion Caramitru Hall, The Seagull by A.P. Chekhov, translated by Raluca Rădulescu, on May 14 and 15, 2022, from 7.30 pm. One of the most famous Chekhovian plays in Romania (over 30 stagings in the last decades) and in the world, The Seagull is approached in a fresh, challenging vision and carefully connected to today's realities by one of the strongest voices of the new generation of creators, Eugen Jebeleanu. He proposes a theater of "turmoils and vulnerabilities", a mixture of passion, cruelty, desperation to live - in short, a contemporary, surprising vision of a famous classic play. The Seagull is a show that puts on display the backstage of the theater, the conflicts between generations in the confrontation of ideas and theatricalities that shakes the beliefs and stereotyped clichés of the representation of people on stage”, states Eugen Jebeleanu. Eugen Jebeleanu, artistic director of the 28 & Cie des Ogres Company from France, theater and opera director, and lately even film director, recently awarded at the Gopo Gala for “best debut film”: Poppy Field (a 2020 production, also awarded at TIFF, in 2021, for Best Director), is a graduate of UNATC (specialization in acting), and has a Master of Directing and Dramaturgy in Paris. In 2010, together with the playwright Yann Verburgh, he founded “Company 28”, and later “Cie des Ogres” in 2017, collaborating in the recent years with the most important theaters in the country, including those in Sibiu. He also directed many shows performed in France and Germany. In 2017, he directed the play Ogres, a project that was awarded by the Fédération d’Associations de Théâtre Populaire (FATP). For the show Itinerary. One day, the world will change directed in 2019 he received the award for best director at the UNITER Awards Gala. He collaborated with the Opera House from Lyon for the play I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, by John Adams. Niko Becker, Irina Movilă, Alexandru Potocean, Sara Cuncea / Eva Cosac, Ada Galeș, Ciprian Nicula / Emilian Mârnea, Istvan Teglas, Emilian Oprea, Richard Bovnoczki, Florentina Țilea are the actors chosen by the director to give voice to the questions that trouble us spectators and artists alike today: “What need does the theater find in the tragic context of a war? What kind of theater represents us today? Where does the artist's discourse meet that of the citizen? What can be our manifesto today on a text written more than 100 years ago? How is fiction made and how do we transform the world by shaking up theater?” An exceptional cast, joined by the set designer Velica Panduru, the image director Marius Panduru and the musician Rémi Billardon, offer an immersive experience in a hypnotic theatrical reality, augmented by video projections and music, with a few scenes performed in foreign languages (but with Romanian subtitles), with moments of frantic rhythm. A show not recommended for children under the age of 16: scenes that can affect them emotionally, scenes with sexual connotations and nudity. “I am guilty! I lost sight of the fact that only a few chosen people can write and act on stage. And I broke the monopoly.” These words, belonging to the main character, Treplev, reflect the perspective of the director's conception and the reading filter of this staging on the Chekhov text. We invite you to visit the Calendar section on the TNB website to see the schedule of the following performances and do not miss this new show of the National Theater from Bucharest. For the first time in Romania, “Fathers and Sons” - a show with a strikingly current topicality
30 April 2022The National Theater from Bucharest announces a new premiere, on April 30, 2022, at the “Ion Caramitru” Hall: Fathers and Sons by Brian Friel (dramatization after the novel of the same name by Ivan Turgheniev). Regarded by critics as Turgenev's most successful novel, Fathers and Sons provoked a heated controversy over the conflict between the parents' generation (keepers of the traditional humanist ideals) and the generation of the rebellious sons (materialistic, disappointed, nihilistic, tempted to destroy everything related to the old lifestyle). After writing this novel in 1862, Turgenev was forced to leave Russia due to the hostile reactions. He settled in Germany, and later in England, where his novel Fathers and Sons was very successful The dramatization of Turgenev's famous novel by Brian Friel (1929-2015) - considered one of the most “Chekhovian” playwrights - premiered on June 26, 1987, at the Royal National Theater in London. In Vlad Massaci's staging on the main stage of the National Theater, Fathers and Sons is a show of a striking thematic topicality, in which you will find the atmosphere of the Russian theater with its characters trapped in a maze of endless emotions and discussions, as well as the English humor and fine irony that rises from the Irish playwright's pen. You will be seduced by the refined and nuanced acting of the actors carefully and sensitively guided by the director in an action that flows naturally in its dramatic moments. The cast of the play: Andrei Huțuleac, Alexandru Potocean, Mihai Călin, Richard Bovnoczki, Crina Semciuc, Cosmina Olariu, Emilia Popescu, Măriuca Bosnea, Diana Dumbravă, Vitalie Bichir / Tomi Cristin, Fulvia Folosea, Emilian Mârnea, Mihai Verbițchi, Andrei Tomi. The world of the “parents”, “out of tune” with the new ideology of the nihilistic youth, sinking into their own inability to change, finds its scenic transposition with deep meanings under the signature of the artists Adrian Damian (sets) and Luiza Enescu (costumes). In fact, through his show, Vlad Massaci reveals how Turgenev / Friel's entire human comedy becomes the drama of an entire world forced to endure the catastrophic aftermath of the ideologies that have marked the history of civilization and humanity. The official premiere will take place on April 30, 2022, at 7 pm, at the “Ion Caramitru” Hall of the “I.L. Caragiale” National Theater in Bucharest. The next performance is scheduled for May 1. Tickets can be purchased at the TNB Box Office, as well as online at www.tnb.ro. Translated by Andreea Codrea-Boeriu
For the first time in Romania, “The Country House” by Donald Margulies
09 April 2022A family story about success and failure Starting from April 9, 2022, 7 pm, the stage of the Studio Hall at the National Theater of Bucharest will host a new show - The Country House by Donald Margulies, “one of the most structured and successful American plays that have ever been on Broadway in the last decade.” (TheaterMania). The direction, translation and musical illustration are signed by a resonant name of the contemporary Romanian theater, Claudiu Goga. Donald Margulies, a Pulitzer Prize winner for the play “Dinner with Friends”, was born in 1954 in New York City and he is a playwright, screenwriter, professor of English and dramatic writing at the Yale University. His plays have been staged in major American theaters, but also in cities such as London, Beirut, Tel Aviv, Stockholm, Tokyo, Mumbai, Berlin, Vienna, Sydney, Copenhagen, Paris and Bucharest. The Country House premiered in 2014 in Los Angeles Having in its cast actors like: Maia Morgenstern, Marius Manole, Gavril Pătru, Marius Bodochi, Raluca Aprodu, Cătălina Mihai, Maruca Băiașu, “The Country House” proposes, with humor, irony and lucidity, a complicated story about a family of artists. “A story about what we live and when we live. Do we really live our lives? Do we live through our careers? Are we living our dreams? Are we living our failures? A story about the many ways to love and the many ways to hate, about the destructive force of a kiss and the destructive force of the lack of a kiss. A story about the weight of spoken words and the pain of unspoken words, about the price of success and the price of failure, about pure art and commercial art, about the demons of pride and the demons of passion, a story about people”. “The Country House” (a deliberately Chekhovian title, as the author states), is a play that “among other things such as time, beauty, age, and memories, explores the universal idea of returning home” - Donald Margulies. The multi-award winning director Claudiu Goga, with two notable achievements on the stages of TNB, “The Dance of the Fairies”, in 2007 and “Crazy for Love”, in 2013, comes back, this time, with “The Country House” - a play about life behind the scenes, but its real subject is how members of a family can hurt each other without the intention of doing so. Tickets are already on sale for the first performances (April 9, 10, 16, 17 and May 1, 2022). You can purchase your tickets at the Theater Box Office or online at www.mystage.ro. At TNB, Titanic waltz, a "sophisticated" interwar comedy
08 April 2022The National Theater from Bucharest announces the premiere of the play Titanic waltz by Tudor Mușatescu, directed by Dan Tudor, a new show on the main stage. The preview will take place on April 8, 2022, and the official premiere will take place on April 10, 2022. Both performances are scheduled to start at 7.30 pm, at the Ion Caramitru Hall. Tudor Mușatescu (1903-1970) had the greatest public success in the history of Romanian theater with "Titanic waltz", which had a hundred performances only in the debut season, 1932-1933, at the National, as recorded by literary critics and historians. The play is brought back to light by one of the most inventive directors of the comic genre, Dan Tudor. As gifted as the author Tudor Mușatescu, with a generous fantasy and the inspiration to transpose, with the ability of a magician of fun, the everyday spirits into situations full of flavor, Dan Tudor manages a staging that does not lack gentle satire and quality sense of humor. However, the success of the play is guaranteed only by its admirable cast - Adela Mărculescu, Amalia Ciolan, Irina Cojar, Alexandra Sălceanu, Afrodita Androne, Oana Constantinescu, Armand Calotă, Lari Giorgescu, Ionuț Toader, Mihai Munteniță, Dragoș Ionescu, Axel Moustache, Daniel Badale - whose headliner is the beloved Dan Puric, who returns (after a long wait from the audience) with a real acting recital of interpretive virtuosity. Playing the part of the modest clerk always caught between the more and more pretentious pretensions of his mother-in-law and his wife, Puric creates an authentic character of a special charm, woven of humor and sadness, exuberance and tenderness. Mimicking naivety and obedience one by one, the gentle Spirache weave in his mind the prank he plays on his family, because he is the owner of two capital secrets… If you miss a sophisticated comedy, in which you can find the atmosphere of the interwar years on the chords of the hand organ, the intrigues in the intimacy of the conjugal home or of the political life (never changed!), even 90 years since its premiere, Titanic Waltz still is the right choice for a perfect evening at the theater, because on the stage of TNB, the formidable artists Dan Puric and Dan Tudor return in the full form of their creativity. Long live comedy! The set of the show is signed by Ştefan Caragiu. Costumes: Liliana Cenean. Stage movement: Florin Fieroiu. The next performance is scheduled for April 20, 2022, at 7.30 pm. The tickets for this performance are already on sale at the TNB Box Office, as well as online, on www.mystage.ro. Translated by Andreea Codrea-Boeriu
