Caramitru-Mălăele, Spinning a Yarn
24 March 2014The two legends of the Romanian theatre embark on a national tour with the show Caramitru-Mălăele, Spinning a Yarn, a fascinating dialogue on poetry, fables, jokes, tales and memories. Always impressive, innovative and unique, the show "Caramitru-Mălăele, Spinning a Yarn", is an improvisation show..."because improvisation comes naturally to an actor", as Horaţiu Mălăele said. The show constantly reinvents itself, it has a whole new rhythm , the humour becomes more entertaining and the creativity blossoms. The remembrance of the past times is brought on stage by Caramitru, who recites with deep emotion and cleverly and skilfully comes up with answers that suit Horaţiu Mălăele's volcanic temper and irresistible charm as well as his sharp sense of humour, the two evoking Shakespeare, Eminescu and Topârceanu. Their dialogue is accompanied by the cello player Adrian Naidin's warm and cheerful harmonies. Due to his unique voice and amazing skills, Adrian Naidin has always touched a deep cord in the music lovers' hearts. He sometimes performs as if an entire orchestra was playing, and at other times, he recites or whispers lyrics. The Greek director Mihalis Kakogiannis was inspired by Adrian Naidin and the Latvian musician Mischa Maisky, also known as "The Paganini of the Cello", considers Adrian to be one of his most talented students.
Spring Stories
09 March 2014On Sunday, the 9th of March 2014, at the National Theatre for Children (in the Media Hall of the National Theatre of Bucharest, at 11:00), the Spring Stories will begin. The Magician, the Stories Fairy and their crew will get you closer to the floral, the spring and the Easter Holiday stories. Five weeks are left until the Palm Sunday and five performances until a new anniversary: on the Easter Sunday, the National Theatre for Children will be celebrating 13 years from its first performance. The Palm celebration (Florii, in Romanian) comes from Floralia, a Roman festival, which used to be organized during spring, in the honour of Flora, goddess of the flowers and the spring, and who, according to the legend, had given to the people the seeds of all flowers. But the Palm celebration also existed in the pre-Christian period. The soul- to-soul relationship between the human beings and the nature is also expressed in the Romanian mythological stories about flowers and it is thought to possess sacral values. At the National Theatre for Children, each performance is a premiere, and the little spectators are invited to join the actors and to take part in the story, by becoming the heroes of the fairy tales; a special programme is brought this spring: until now, in the season᾽ s stories, the heroes were especially performed by the boys; but this time, the spring stories overturn the cast and, therefore, the main roles will be performed especially by the girls. The Spring Programme will start with the Flowers Story performance and will end with the Easter Celebration Stories. Each Sunday, at 11:00, in the Media Hall of the National Theatre of Bucharest, the Colchicum ( Brândușa), the Viola, the Snowdrop and many other flowers will relate you their stories. These performances are part of the educational project initiated in 2001 by the Abracadabra Foundation, which is run by the actor Marian Râlea in partnership with the National Theatre of Bucharest. Both children and parents will understand the moral of the stories and will respect the nature. Furthermore, an important objective of the event, and of the entire programme as well is to encourage the children ᾽s imagination. We warmly wait you to the theatre! Don᾽ t forget that the entrance at the Media Hall is on Batiștei Street, on the newly built platform, which links the Studio Hall to the Great Hall; next to it, at the Studio Hall, is the new ticket agency of the NTB; Ticket price: 20 lei. (Tickets cannot be purchased after the programme has started!). Running time: 1h 30. Translated by Aida Birghilă MTTLC, University of Bucharest
Caramitru-Mălăele, Spinning the Yarn
04 March 2014The two legends of the Romanian theatre will be on a tour again, performing the play Spinning the Yarn, a seductive duel of poetry, fables, morals, short stories and memories. Always surprising, always different and exceptional, Spinning the Yarn is an improvisation performance... ̒̒ ̒ because improvisation represents actually the supreme state of the actor, as Horațiu Mălăele states. Every time it is performed, the play is different, the humor is livelier, and the proficiency becomes more and more obvious. The memory of old times is brought up in the scene by Caramitru, who recites thrillingly and, with intelligence and talent, imagines answers suitable for Horațiu Mălăele, volcanic, irresistible and with a sparkling humor, the two of them being witnessed by Shakespeare, Eminescu or Topârceanu.
The NTB Conferences
03 March 2014Adriana Babeți will be holding the conference titled Amazons for Everyone on Sunday, the 2nd of March, at 11:00 a.m. A conference on the subject of amazons cannot betray the spirit of the heroines who are presented to the audience. Hence, the conference was conceived as a battle, at the end of which both the topic and the audience need to be conquered. The book upon which this conference is based, titled Amazons: A Story and recently published at Polirom Publishing House, was designed in the same vein. Having this double target before her, Ms. Babeți will gradually besiege the most important themes regarding the story of the amazons. The amazonic myth, created by the ancient Greeks, will be encircled concentrically: starting with the origin of their name, moving on to their genealogy (who were their ancestors and protectors, what was the ancestry of the female fighters) and continuing with the lands bordering myth and reality where they supposedly lived.
Carnival for Children!
23 February 2014The Carnival, the most appreciated and awaited type of entertainment throughout this entire season of events at the Teatrul Naţional pentru Copii ( The National Theatre for Children), the thrilling homework, that engages the whole family in the excitement of preparations, can be seen at Sala Media at TNB. The children can enjoy festal occasions two Sundays in a row. According to the tradition of this theatre, each performance is a premiere, therefore a carnival show is different from the other ones. Sunday, the 23 of February, starting at 11 o`clock, the children are welcome to The Carnival before the Great Lent and the following Sunday, on the 2nd of March, starting also at 11 o`clock, you are welcome to The Spring Carnival. Romanian tales will be told again for you, the youngest of the theatrical public. Having the carnivalesque music as a background, the good is once more up against the evil in difficult situations and tricky traps. The everlasting fairytale characters, the lovely old customs, as well as the extremely original costumes will delight the eyes of whoever joins this colourful spring festal occasion. To be a child is a very important thing, the hosts of the event support this affirmation by asking you to be prepared at your best, from the mask and costume up to the tale that contains the character you have chosen. At the theatre you will learn more about the characteristics of the carnival. Celebrating the beginning of the Great Lent, with a joyful group of people that turns the world upside-down ( kings become buffoons and beggars become kings), is considered to be a very solemn rite, that has been passed down from the earliest generations and performed with a burst of jollity. We look forward to seeing you at the theatre, dressed up and good-to-go for the Carnival! Ana-Maria Florea, MTTLC MTTLC, The University of Bucharest

10 February 2014Sunday, 9th of February, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., in the Small Hall of the NTB will take place the conference with the theme Figaro's Myth. How can politics be likable? held by Sever Voinescu. Examining Beaumarchais' plays, the two well-known operas by Mozart and Rossini, and also Beaumarchias' amazing biography, our conference will try to identify Figaro's 'art' and apply it to today's Romania. How could he have been efficient in antagonistic situations, in the name of the values he acted, and most of all how could he have been so sympathetic among so many antipathetic? Our argument is that Figaro made out of politics a likable and efficient occupation without making fun of it, without minimizing it, and especially without compromising it as an art of the possible. Can his 'recipe' be applied even today? Translated by: Dumitrescu Ioana-Alexandra MTTLC, The University of Bucharest
