NTF 30 / NTF Otherwise

06 November 2020

The 30th edition of the National Theatre Festival will take place in multimedia format (online, TV, radio) from November 22nd to 29th, 2020, under the slogan NTF 30 / NTF OTHERWISE. The artistic direction and the selection of the programme belong to the theatre critics Ludmila Patlanjoglu, Maria Zărnescu and Călin Ciobotari. Sections The current edition of the National Theatre Festival is built on the intention to put in dialogue the past with the theatrical present, the aesthetics of the creators of yesterday with the new forms of a present that is still looking for its identity. NTF 30 / NTF Otherwise provides premises for a deep meditation on the future. The structure below reflects this principle and puts it into practice. NotforgettingTF aims to highlight part of the spectacular Romanian heritage established in recent decades. It is a section that involves revisiting and recovering the past, but also redefining the archive as a living space of memory. The ten selected shows are exemplary by the force of creation, by the depth and ability to articulate stage discourses about man and humanity. There are shows that impose a mandatory quotation in any type of history of the Romanian show after 1990. UnrestTF refers to young people whose voices have been heard distinctly and constantly in recent years, certain bets of the present, increasingly well-formed figures in what could be called the new wave of Romanian theatre creators. The art of the great ACTOR celebrates grace, virtuosity and fulfilment in the profession, qualities that have proven over time the leading artists of our theatre. The proposed recitals represent as many memorable art lessons of the actor. They stimulate and inspire, rejoice, and uplift spiritually. At the same time, they prove the strength of a creative triangle: actor - playwright (with an emphasis, in this section on Romanian drama) - director. Premiere in NTF, continuing a tradition of the festival, presents for the first time a show of the TVR Production House, Caligula by Albert Camus. The Hidden Show, a formula that borrows the title of a book by director Alexa Visarion, shifts the focus of interest from the finished stage product to the dynamics of the work process. It contains testimonials of creation, portraits and self-portraits of major creators, glances thrown inside the laboratory, revelations of the hidden show that always doubles the visible show. Invited performances continue a successful tradition of the National Theatre Festival, highlighting the opening to the international artistic discourse and enabling the encounter of the public with great performances of the world. "Words, words, words ..." is the discursive component of the current edition of the Festival. It proposes a series of colloquia and theatrical dialogues meant, on the one hand, to discuss major issues of the present, and on the other hand, to mediate the meeting with contemporary theatrical personalities. The aesthetics of the pandemic represents shows born amid a crisis as a reaction of art to nothingness and as an effort of several creators to identify new aesthetic solutions, exits from deadlock. They are argument-shows, pleas for a lofty idea: no matter what happens, theatre must continue to exist. NTF ON AIR is produced in partnership with Radio Romania Cultural and Radio Romania News. It contains a focus on Cristian Munteanu, the emblematic director who decisively influenced the Romanian radio theatre, revealed through seven shows and a play that bears his signature. The theatre man Emil Boroghină enjoys special attention, a unique voice in the Romanian theatre, founding director of the "Shakespeare" International Festival of Craiova and initiator of the only poetry theatre in Romania, the Poesis Theatre. The well-known show Vorba de cultura will host a series of exciting dialogues with young artists present in NTF. Further seven radio theatre performances validated by multiple international awards will complete this consistent ON AIR section. 29 September 2020

The National Theatre launches NTB-TV

20 July 2020

The NTB YouTube Channel - the online video interface of the “I.L. Caragiale” National Theatre of Bucharest - hosted between March and June 2020, live streaming broadcasts of the NTB Conferences (pre-recorded materials over the years) and of some of the performances fixed on video and kept in the Theatre archive. Loyal viewers, older or new subscribers of the NTB YouTube Channel (today, 9150 and not only from Romania) were able to watch online titles from the current repertoire: "The Tempest", "Allegro, ma non troppo", "Lottery Tickets”,“ God dresses from the Thrift”, “Light, at the End of the Tunnel”. However, older shows that can no longer be seen on stage were broadcast, such as "Scourge", "Breaking News", "Take, Ianke and Cadir", "A Midsummer Night’s Dream". In recent years, the "I.L. Caragiale'' National Theatre of Bucharest has made recordings of performances and famous NTB Conferences through the NTB Media Studio, its own multimedia studio, especially developed to create photo-video productions necessary to promote NTB, but also to preserve the theatre’s video archive. For our viewers not to feel so much the distance imposed by the circumstances, NTBlaunched a new challenge this month: NTB-TV. This is, since July, the new name of the YouTube channel of the Bucharest National Theatre. On NTB-TV, you will be able to see, starting with July 20th, 2020, the first live online broadcasts from the heart of the Bucharest National Theatre (both literally and figuratively). NTB-TV will broadcast live, video materials produced by the NTB communication team, with the aid of the NTB Media Studio team, which will ensure the footage and live broadcast of video materials made especially for the theatre-loving audience. NTB-TV online is a first step towards an online television dedicated to real stars, as we like to say, in the context in which the term “star” seems to be used, lately, too often and too carelessly. On NTB-TV, you will be able to see interviews with actors, directors, scenographers, show technicians, in short theatre people, especially from the National Theatre team, but also with those who join our team during the projects carried out here. NTB-TV will start the series of live broadcasts, on Monday, July 20th, 2020, with an interview on the premiere of the documentary theatre show, Romanian Diary.1989, directed by Carmen Lidia Vidu. We will learn from the artists who participated in the creation of the show, thoughts, hopes, ideas and maybe ... secrets during the work. The broadcast being live, you will be able to intervene in the discussion through the messages, you will be able to ask questions to the guests and you will have at least a chance to find out the answers, on the spot. We hope you will join us in large numbers, on NTB-TV, a video channel that you can access at any time on http://www.youtube.com/c/TeatrulNaţionalILCaragialeBucharest  The first live broadcast of NTB-TV will start on Monday, July 20th, at 5:00 p.m., just a few days before the premiere date of the show “Romanian Diary. 1989 ". The show will be presented for the first time, on July 24th, 25th and 26th, 2020, at the NTB Amphitheatre, one of the few theatrical spaces open to the public during this period. Here, the programme “Summer Nights, Up, on the Theatre” takes place again this year, in the open air, on the roof of the Bucharest National Theatre. We are waiting for you, every night, to shows and, more recently, online, on NTB-TV!   Translated by Simona Nichiteanu

At NTB, Premiere in Mid Crisis: Romanian Diary.1989

08 July 2020

In an extremely difficult period that the artistic world is going through, the I.L. Caragiale National Theatre of Bucharest announces the first premiere in the midst of a pandemic period: Romanian Diary. 1989, a show conceived and directed by Carmen Lidia Vidu, will have the first three performances on July 24th, 25th and 26th, 2020, from 9.30 pm. On the evening of July 25th, 2020, there will be a post-show dialogue between the audience and the directors. Special guest: Mădălin Hodor, historic. The performances will take place under the conditions imposed by the authorities, in the NTB Amphitheater, the open-air performance hall on the theatre rooftop. On the 30th anniversary of the Revolution that violently removed communist President Nicolae Ceausescu, four actors of the National tell the personal experiences of that period, how they lived those bloody events and how their lives changed (or not) ever since.Carmen Lidia Vidu, the director who led the Romanian theatre in the area of multimedia documentary, chose four of the most famous Romanian actors to shed light on their stories: Ion Caramitru, Oana Pellea, Florentina Ţilea and Daniel Badale play their own parts. Concerning Ion Caramitru, details about the way in which he actively participated in the Revolution are known, the live broadcast expression - "Brothers, we have won!" remaining legendary. In 1989, Daniel Badale was a soldier in the Army and it is interesting the confession of the one who, "theoretically", was against the revolutionaries.Florentina Țilea was Nicolae Ceaușescu's reciter during his official visits to Iași, and Oana Pellea was mistaken for the wife of terrorist Vlase when she appeared on Romanian Television to defend it following the "Call for Artists".The four actors will be joined, through video appearances, by Germina Nagâț, member of the College of the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (CNSAS), former military prosecutor Dan Voinea, who initially investigated the "Revolution File" and the well-known British historian Dennis Deletant, an expert on Romanian communism.Along with this show, the National Theatre takes to the stage another premiere and also marks a record in the history of the Romanian theatre, with the largest video projection, on a huge wall, 33 meters long and 21 meters high. The multimedia show will give viewers the opportunity to compose a powerful and very humane puzzle. History is seen through the prism of personal biographies. Research, image and sound make up the multimedia universe that completes the actors’ stories. The most appreciated project of director Carmen Lidia Vidu, in the country and abroad, Romanian Diary includes so far 3 theatre performances (Jurnal de România. Timișoara; Romanian Diary. Constanța and Romanian Diary. Sfântu Gheorghe), two short films (My Romanian Diary and Romanian Diary. Muslim Diary) as well as an exhibition.Romanian Diary is a multidisciplinary project that merges film, photography and theatre, which aims to be, through a series of uncensored and direct confessions, an honest mirror of interpersonal relations, decisively influenced by the urban environment, but also a call for social and community involvement. We mention some international awards and participations that crown the international extension of the project: "My Romanian Diary", Independent Days International Film Festival, Germany, European Cinematography AWARDS (ECA), Netherlands and FILMFEST DRESDEN - in 2020. In 2019, for "Romanian Diary. Timișoara ”- Award of Excellence offered by the Timișoara City Hall and Voice of Europe, Jena, Germany. In the same year, participation with “Romanian Diary. Constanța” in EUROPALIA, Belgium. Numerous participations with “Romanian Diary. Timișoara ”, including: National Theatre Festival and FEST-FDR, 2019. With Romanian Diary. Muslim Diary ”, in 2018: Best Women Short - Independent Shorts Awards, Los Angeles, Best Documentary based on Women (Non-Fiction) - JIFF 16 International Film Festivals in Jaipur, India, Award Winner - Changing Face International Film Festival, Sydney and Finalist - Eurasia International Monthly Film Festival, Moscow. And in 2017, the Schauspielhaus in Vienna presented “Romanian Diary. Sfântu Gheorghe” and “Romanian Diary. Constanta"."The theatre risks becoming irrelevant to the community," says the director. "The danger of vanity lurks and leads us to isolation. We only listen to the opinions that confirm ours. Romanian Diary. 1989 is my way of saying that "you make history, your attitude matters", says Carmen Lidia Vidu. You are most welcome to the theatre! The following performances will take place on: 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th August 2020. All performances start at 9.30 pm.Here, you will find the rules imposed by the pandemic period regarding access to the theatre and participation in the show. We invite you to read them.   Translated by Simona Nichiteanu

27 June 2020

From the desire to meet and welcome theatre lovers from other meridians, the I.L. Caragiale National Theatre has partnered with the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, responding to its request to present, for the first time to the United States audience - made up primarily of Americans, but also of the Romanian diaspora - some of the branded shows from the NTB repertoire, within the programme entitled Digital Stage, developed by RCINY. English subtitled recordings of these shows will be made available online by NTB, being broadcast at 8 pm (New York time), 3 am (Bucharest time). The first broadcast of this series takes place on Saturday, June 27th, 2020 and offers American viewers the opportunity to watch for the first time, on the RCINY Facebook page, in live streaming, the show Lottery Tickets, adaptation of the eponymous short story by I.L. Caragiale, directed by Alexandru Dabija, a show from the current NTB repertoire, whose premiere took place in 2012, within the "Caragiale Year". The show brought the director Alexandru Dabija the Best Director Award at the UNITER Gala in 2013 and two other awards to the set designer Helmut Stürmer: the Award for best scenography at the UNITER Gala and the Award for scenography at the Romanian Comedy Festival. The show participated in the first edition of the MITEM Festival ("Madach International Theatre Meeting"), organized by the National Theatre of Budapest in 2014, within the traditional Budapest Spring Festival, and in 2017 at the "EUROKONTEXT s.k." International Festival, in Bratislava, Slovakia, enjoying an excellent reception at both events. We look forward to echoes of this American premiere in the virtual space, hoping that this partnership will pave the way for further initiatives, designed to stimulate interest in Romanian culture and a better knowledge thereof across the ocean, through high-quality projects. The next premiere of the series Digital Stage will show The Tempestafter William Shakespeare (directed by Alexander Morfov), to be broadcast this summer by NTB for RCINY.   Translated by Simona Nichiteanu
